Knocking on wood is an old pagan/Celtic tradition. They believed that trees had spirits living inside of them and 'knocking on wood' would get the spirit's attention and that hopefully the spirit would help the knocker avoid any unpleasantries.

I knew an old gentleman who was very good at guessing what sex your baby would be. He said that unmarried women who got pregnant were more likely to have their firstborn be a girl. But a married woman's 1st child would probably be a boy. He put it down to women's hormones and their strong sex drive would produce a girl. He said a lot of women that married were virgins and probably afraid of sex so their lack of 'desire' led to more male children being firstborn. He was spot on about me and my mother. Hardly a scientific study, though.

I've never known a child to not want a fridge or oven cardboard box to play with. They will spend hours coloring or painting them and turning them into all sorts of things like a pirate ship or a UFO or submarine or a dragon or a mini house, etc. And when the big box has been reduced to flat panels they use them to slide down hills, stairs or mounds of snow. Best toy, ever!

My great grandmother lived to 113. My grandfather was 97 when he passed (his 2nd wife did him in). My other grandparents lived into their late 80's and my mother passed at 99. So I am wondering what I will accomplish during my life span since I've got 30 years to go to get to 100. Maybe I'll go build a spaceship because it's good to keep trying new things. But I'll stay away from the Kraken rum for my 100th birthday because it tastes great but that stuff makes me crazy.

My dad was a fan of Dr Who, although that show never held my attention for long. He loved science fiction shows. Star Trek - if memory serves me correctly - was on at 10pm (9 pm?) Friday nights. I remember this because we all had to go grocery shopping together on Friday evenings and absolutely had to be home in time for Star Trek. But when Shatner was in his prime I definitely was a fan of his show. I just wonder if it was in his contract that each episode had him bare his chest or wear a shredded top.

Not the green ones. As a kid I loved the red m+ms. They tasted different and better than the other ones. My friends and I would do blindfold tests to see if any of the candies tasted different and most of us agreed that the red ones did taste better. Then the FDA decided that red dyes 1&2 had cancer causing properties so they changed the dyes they used to use to something else. Lipstick really suffered with this red dye ban. As a pre-teen I bought a lipstick that the store put in a basket on discount to get rid of them. Oh, my lipstick was a deep, dark, rich looking red and I loved it. Today most red lipsticks are more orangey or have a brownish tint to them. I still have that lipstick and it's still a glorious red and it hasn't hurt me yet!

No rack and pinion steering wheel, eh? I spent years barfing during car rides because the motion of the car made me sick. When I see movies where the driver is turning the steering wheel back and forth but not actually turning the car right or left all I can think of is how I would be spraying that driver because of his rotten driving.

What, no unicorns?? That animal is Scotland's animal. Surely we can find time for unicorns? Unicorns for everybody not just the Scots. Being Scottish I am fine with sharing as many unicorns that you can find.

When I was 7 I was deathly ill from Scarlet Fever. Our house had an actual "Quarantined" sign stuck to our front door. My eyes had tons of floaters to the point that it's like trying to look through heavy fog. I just had to live with it, there was no cure or fix for it. Many decades later I was getting an eye exam and the doctor said "You had Scarlet Fever, didn't you?" I asked him "how did you know?" He said Scarlet Fever tends to affect your eyesight and floaters are pretty common.

I remember as a small child my mother took me to the Museum of Natural History in Boston. There, on a pedestal, sitting on a cushion and in an enclosed glass case sat a huge dinosaur egg. Bigger than a basketball it definitely was 'museum quality'. I must have stared at that egg for 15 minutes. Nothing my mother said would make me leave that pedestal and look at other things. That egg looked in perfect condition and I was fascinated with it. It was the beginning of my love for all things 'dinosaur'. Paleontologist was the name I wanted to have. My body said different being unable to do the digs but to this day I still love all things 'dinosaur'.

My Scottish grand parents had a small throne with a removable stone under the seat which was a representation of the 'Stone of Scone'. I used to play with it as a small child. I had the fortune to go to Scotland in April 2001 and got to see the real thing. Scone is pronounced like the word awn or lawn but with sc in front of the one. Skawn.
