I'm Human

(YouTube link)

The broadcasting squad at Liberty Middle School in Madison, Alabama produced this video. It was entirely shot on iPads and mixed with music by Sigur Rós.
"As people were walking out of the school, it was clear that it was the best vibe in the school that had been there all year," said broadcasting teacher Daniel Whitt. "Everyone was high fiving. People were smiling at each other. People were saying, ‘Hey man loved your sign.'"

Vandals Leave Photographic Evidence

A Frenchman and an Irishman went into a bar in New Zealand, but they weren't supposed to. And they might have gotten away with the crime if they hadn't left their camera with shots of their escapade in it.
David Farrell, 26, of Ireland, and Nicholas Moinet, 24, of France, were among a group of travelling vineyard workers who broke into the river boat on the Opawa River, Blenheim, drank alcohol and took photos of each other having a great time, and then left the camera behind.

In the Blenheim District Court yesterday, Judge Anthony Walsh fined the pair $300 each and ordered them to pay reparation of $240 to the boat's owner before January 20 and additional court costs.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graham Single said the pair boarded the boat with others and took photographs of themselves on Friday, December 9.

They removed the rollers on the door before drinking three bottles of spirits and taking more than 40 bottles of beer, Single said.

"The offenders left the boat and continued drinking at a nearby campground, leaving the camera behind. Police later identified them."

Foreclosure Quilts

Kathryn Clark, an artist and former urban planner, created a series of quilts based on home foreclosures in different cities. The locations of the foreclosures are random, based on statistics from each city, and are represented by holes in the fabric. This quilt is called "Cleveland." See some others at Trendland. What Is It? game 210

Here it is, time for our collaboration with the always amusing What Is It? Blog. Tell us what this thing is, if you know. If you don't, make a wild guess!

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Post no URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners: the first correct guess and the funniest (albeit ultimately wrong) guess will win T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

For another, closer view, check out the What Is It? Blog. Have fun and good luck!

Update: the object in question is a wolf collar for protecting a dog from attack by wolves, used mostly in Europe. Rastercat was the first with the right answer, but did not select a shirt. Cricket had the funniest answer: it's the Dugger family's marshmallow roaster! That one deserves a t-shirt from the NeatoShop. You'll find the answers for all of this week's mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Murals

Camilo José Vergara takes photographs of street art. A popular subject for the art he finds is Martin Luther King, Jr. who appears in murals in city after city. Smithsonian has a dozen of Vergara's pictures of these MLK installations, with some information about each one. The mural pictured here depicts the 1963 "I Have A Dream" speech, on a wall in Philadelphia. Link

Smithsonian also has the story behind the original photograph that became the iconic image of that speech. Link

The Curious Case of William James Clark

William James Clark was caught impersonating a Green Beret at a gun show in Alaska in 2010. Real veterans can spot a fake easier than those with no military experience realize. That story reached the FBI and Clark was arrested for a string of check fraud crimes. Clark eventually pled guilty to scamming over $66,000 from 224 people. But there's a lot more to the story of William James Clark.
At a glance, Clark's crime spree seems a couple notches above petty but not much different from the other 750,000 or so cases of check fraud that occur every year in the United States. But even though a dime-a-dozen crime is what did him in, Clark's road to the Last Frontier is anything but ordinary.

Clark has a penchant for living a fake life. One time he assumed control of the scene of a bridge collapse disaster that had every imaginable type of real government boots on the ground. Another time he nearly caused a made-for-TV international crisis when he told the Russian Embassy he was working with the U.S. military to assassinate then-president Vladimir Putin.

AlaskaDispatch tells of Clark's bizarre adventures that fueled speculation that he was a spy, a victim of government brainwashing, mentally ill, or possibly just an imaginative con man. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

Snow Forts

One of the best things a kid (or an adult) can do with tons of snow is make a snow fort. They keep the wind off you, lend a hand to all kinds of imaginative play, and with enough kids inside, they even get warm! But how fancy did you ever get with a snow fort? Unreality magazine has a collection of forts that will make your inner child green with envy. Link

More Movie Posters from an Alternative Universe

Last year, we showed you a gallery of Alternate Universe Movie Posters by Sean Hartter. Peter Stults took this idea and ran with it, giving us another collection of awesome modern movies starring actors from a different generation. Once again, it was difficult to select one poster to put here; you need to go see the rest. http://www.behance.net/gallery/Movies-From-An-Alternate-Universe/2783319 -via Metafilter

The Danger of Farting in Space

Between 1968 and 1971, researchers Edwin L. Murphy and Doris H. Calloway published three, count 'em, three studies on flatulence. The 1969 paper was about astronauts and their farts, specifically a study to determine the level of flatulence produced by difference astronaut space diets. Picturing how the study went brings into focus the many indignities astronauts face for their shot at space travel.
Their paper formed part of a loose trilogy of flatulence-related papers that the pair worked on, which kicked off with 1968's "The Use of Expired Air to Measure Intestinal Gas Formation" and concluded with 1971's "Reduction of Intestinal Gas-Forming Properties of Legumes by Traditional and Experimental Food Processing Methods." Truly, if you needed to know something about farting in the late 1960s or early 1970s, you went to Calloway and Murphy. I would kill to be able to put something like that on a business card.

Life-size Storm Trooper Cake

Believe it or not, this is a completely edible cake. A 6' 4" tall Storm Trooper cake was constructed by Amanda Oakleaf Cakes for the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston. The project took ten people two weeks of work, but how they did it is no secret. By popular demand, the bakery posted a photo gallery that depicts the process of building the cake, which was later consumed by around 600 fans. Link -via Boing Boing

A 14 Day Apocalypse

Redditor Vidzilla composed a story about the end of the world using the internet: website screenshots, photographs, social networking, generators, and news sites -you know, the way internet surfers get their information. The saga begins on January 1, 2012 and ends on the 14th (redditors who followed the story had to wait for each installment). You should click on each day in order, and enlarge the images to follow the progress, but beware that the images become increasingly graphic and may be disturbing to some people. There are also some links in the images for further reading. Each day's reddit link also has a discussion in the comments. Link -via Metafilter
