The floating house that was used as MacGyver's home in seasons 3-6 of the TV series MacGyver is for sale. The 1200 square foot house is not a houseboat, but is meant to be at least semi-permanently docked. It has two sleeping lofts and one and a half baths. The home is moored on the Fraser River in British Columbia, and the buyer can take immediate possession.

Officials in Adelaide, Australia, were not happy to see the honor they bestowed upon singer Cher for sale at eBay. The Key to the City was sold early today on the auction site. Mayor Stephen Yarwood said he was "exceptionally disappointed."
"It must be very embarrassing for her if she is selling it because she needs the money," Yarwood told the city's Adelaide Advertiser newspaper.
The man who presented Cher the key, former mayor Steve Condous, said the award had been in recognition of her performance at the 1990 Formula One Grand Prix and the fact that she "added a lot of charisma" to the event.
"I'm disappointed. I would have thought that getting the key to a city like Adelaide would have had some value to her, but obviously it doesn't because she wouldn't have got rid of it," said Condous.
"If she didn't want to keep it she should have returned it back to the city."
The bidding is is now closed; the key sold for over $95,000. Link -via Arbroath
Anders Behring Breivik is currently on trial in Oslo, Norway, for killing 77 people during a rampage last summer. In a square near the courthouse, around 40,000 people gathered today to refute Breivik's stated opinions by singing the song "Children of the Rainbow," which was made famous by Norwegian singer Lillebjoern Nilsen (who led the crowd in Oslo). The song was adapted from the Pete Seeger song "My Rainbow Race" (lyrics). Breivik had mentioned the song as an object of his scorn. The demonstration was organized through an internet campaign, and other groups sang in cities all over Norway. Link -via Metafilter
If you read enough of the signs at any sizable demonstration, you'll eventually run across one with an obscure cultural reference or an internet meme. Whether you agree with the politics behind them or not, those signs are always a treat! But you don't have to look for them yourself, because Jill Harness did that already, and posted 18 of the funniest at Oddee. Link

Many cities adopt a "sister city" across the pond. These matchups between the New World and the Old World serve as a sort of cultural exchange. People in the village of Dull, in Perthshire, Scotland, have shown their sense of humor by seeking out a partnership with the Oregon logging town of Boring.
Elizabeth Leighton, from Grandtully in Highland Perthshire, came up with the scheme to form the partnership between two of the world's least "exciting" communities when she was on a cycling holiday.
She passed through Boring and thought it would be an ideal partnership with the community of Dull.
She sent an email to her friend Emma Burtles, who lives in Dull, and got in touch with Steve Bates, who chairs the Boring Community Planning Organisation.
Community councillor Marjorie Keddie said: "It might seem like a joke, but this could have real benefits for Dull. Everyone has been smiling at the prospect of the very eye-catching road sign this will inevitably require."

For many years, I "knew" that the Volkswagen was invented by Ferdinand Porsche. But the story is actually much more complicated. In 1923, long before auto companies were competing to offer Hitler a "people's car" (Volkswagen), Josef Ganz was working on a design for a small, beetle-shaped car. By 1930 he had a prototype, and by 1933 a manufacturer was making Ganz's Standard Superior model pictured here.
Hitler by then was determined to support the development of a Volkswagen for the German people. Having found no cooperation amongst the big car manufacturers, an independent development consortium was created, led by Ferdinand Porsche. As a Jew, Josef Ganz was an impossible choice. Porsche was now set the task to design a people’s car for 1,000 Reichsmark – a maximum selling price propagated by Ganz in Motor-Kritik.
The Nazis made sure that any Jewish connections to the Volkswagen were erased from history. They banned Ganz from publishing, as well as the entire German press from publishing anything about him. Overnight the name Josef Ganz disappeared from the German motoring scene.
