Rise of the Living Type

You've seen artistic alphabets here with letters designed to evoke various pop culture worlds, but this is not a modern idea. Polish goldsmith Jan Christian Bierpfaff designed this fancy Baroque "organic alphabet" in the mid-1600s. See the rest of it at BibliOdyssey. Link

Bomb Disposal Robot is Ring Bearer

The bride is a mechanical engineer who helped design the Dragon Runner unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). So when Laura got married, it was only appropriate for the little robot to take part. As the ring bearer! The Dragon Runner wore a tiny tuxedo and carried the ring in while the song "Mr. Roboto" played. A grand time was had by all. You can see a video about the robot (but not the wedding) at Electronic Design. Link -via Gizmodo

Inside Cyriak's Brain

(YouTube link)

In Cyriak Harris' new video, Because, we get to see what he looks like -sort of. His explanation:
So I found a stupid photo of my face and decided to make a video out of it. Why? Just because.

Its all done with 3d layers in Adobe After Effects, it also gave my computer severe indigestion and melted my brain somewhat.

Well, that makes perfect sense. -via Arbroath

This Bears Repeating

(YouTube link)

One good head-licking deserves another, until before you know it, you've got a conga line of bears! There's no word on where this video was taken, or how many bears are there altogether. -via Buzzfeed

Ignore Hitler

Michael is a Scottish artist and blogger who plays Draw Something, the popular game where people guess words from other's drawings. Only Michael always draws Hitler. Hitler usually has nothing to do with the target word, so the words "ignore Hitler" are also included. He's done this so much that he has posted his drawings on a blog, appropriately entitled Ignore Hitler. Link -via The Daily What

The 13 Loneliest Outhouses on Earth

When you're looking for an outhouse, they shouldn't be this hard to find. I understand you want them located away from the main house, but these are far away from anything! However, the locations were probably selected for the incredible views, which make a photo gallery of outhouses something worth looking through. Link

Deepstaria Enigmatica

(YouTube link)

It looks like a sheet of plastic or fabric that was tossed into the ocean, but this is an animal. A jellyfish, actually, called Deepstaria enigmatica. Link -via the Presurfer

A Different Homecoming Surprise

(YouTube link)

Most of the "homecoming surprise" videos you see are families being surprised by a service member coming home from deployment. This story, however, has a twist. Melissa Cooney submitted the video of her husband Staff Sgt. Jeremy Cooney and son Michael to the Welcome Home Blog.
"When my husband left on his deployment, our 6-year-old son could not walk on his own. He has cerebral palsy. Doctors originally said that he would never walk or do much of anything. While daddy was away, he learned to walk. For his homecoming, we set it up for Michael to walk to his daddy for the first time ever! We kept the fact that he could walk a secret the whole time his dad was gone!"

Alduin the World Eater Dragon Cake

Believe it or not, this picture is of a birthday cake! Alduin is a dragon character from the video game world of Skyrim. Vera at Baking Obsession made this cake for her son Tim's birthday.
It was made of four 13?x18? sheets of chocolate cake, soaked in strawberry syrup, and sandwiched with bittersweet strawberry ganache (5 lbs of chocolate). Alduin’s core is made of modeling chocolate. His scales, horns, and spikes are made from gum paste. The double-sided wings are half-and-half (fondant/gum paste). His eyes are Swarovsky crystals.

The final decorations were applied with an air brush. Awesome! See lots more photos at her site. Link -via The Daily What Geek

Disney Days Quiz

The "classic" Disney animated films are considered to be those big ones produced before 1960. Sure, you've seen them all, but unless you're of a certain age, you probably didn't see them as first-run films. The challenge of this quiz from mental_floss is to recall how old each one actually is. You'll be given a pair of movies, and you decide which one was released earlier.

Score: 100% (10 out of 10)
I, being old and having relatively young children, scored very well. Link

The Strangest Tanks of World War I

Yesterday we posted about The Strangest Tanks in History at Dark Roasted Blend. Now part two is up, covering tanks of World War I, when armies got serious about building tanks, and tried a wide variety of designs. The tank pictured here is called Best's Track Machine Model 75, an American design. See lots more in part two of this tank history series. Link

Ain't it the truth? Just like bubble wrap, mankind will always find a more amusing way to use things. Link

At first, you think you've seen a ride like this before then OH NO IT'S FALLING APART! Oh, it's supposed to do that? I've had all the thrills I need just watching it on video. -via Boing Boing
