Dutch World Cup Shirts

It's been done before, but the effect is still funny! These shirts were designed for the Dutch Football Federation for the 2010 World Cup tournament beginning next week in South Africa. Do I see a woman wearing one of these in the background? Link -via Nag on the Lake

Survival Tip: Disrupt the Power Grid

Imagine you are stranded in the woods with no way to call for help. An unnamed man in Saskatchewan found himself in just such a position, but he figured out a plan that worked. He cut down some power line poles! Several hundred people in Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake Denesuline Nation lost electrical power for two days. But the power company found the lost traveler.
"He was found under his boat in a very distressed state, so essentially he was stranded for a number of days and just desperate for people to know where he was," SaskPower spokesman James Parker said.

The man reported he had been on a boat on the lake when he hit bad weather. He ended up stranded in the bush, with no way to communicate with the outside world, Parker said.

But he had an axe and he knew SaskPower would have to check the downed line, so he went to work.

"Essentially it was mission accomplished, because we got the call, we chartered a helicopter … and on Friday around noon we discovered him," Parker said.

The Great Television Nickname Match-Up, Vol. 1

In many TV shows, you know someone by their nickname, and you only know their given name if you pay close attention. In this Lunchtime Quiz from mental_floss, you'll have to match up characters' nicknames with the character's real name on the show. I scored 60%, which means I missed every one that I took a guess on. Link

Booty-shaking Frogs

Male red-eyed tree frogs communicate with each other by shaking their butts. This behavior was captured on infrared camera in the rain forest of Panama by Michael Caldwell of Boston University and his colleagues.
This shaking, known as tremulation, is a form of communication between male tree frogs.

The males are tremulating to establish which is the dominant male. They’re claiming territory for their ‘calling area’ where they spend the night calling for a female mate.

Sometimes, the shaking leads to wrestling among males… and maybe even more shaking, until the loser retreats.

Bat is a Hybrid Fusion of Three Species

Interspecies sex doesn't always result in offspring that are infertile, like a mule. A fruit bat found in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, Artibeus schwartzi, is a hybrid that has descended from three different species.
Peter Larsen from Texas Tech University confirmed the bat’s unique ancestry by sequencing DNA from 237 individuals belonging to the seven fruit bat species of the Lesser Antilles. He found that A.schwartzi’s main genome is a cross between those of two other fruit bats, A. jamaicensis and A. planirostris, with a tiny minority of sequences that don’t match either genome.

Complicating matters, animal cells also have a separate smaller genome, housed in energy-providing structures called mitochondria. But A.schwartzi’s mitochondrial genome doesn’t resemble that of either of the two species that gave rise to it. These accessory genes must have come from yet another source – a third species of fruit bat that has either since gone extinct or that hasn’t been discovered yet.

Hybrid species that came from a mashup of two other species are rare enough, but three is very rare indeed. Link

Wartime Prisoner Escapes

How would Cracked commemorate Memorial Day? By posting a list of The 5 Most Badass Prison Escapes in the History of War. These escapes took imagination, intelligence, and nerves of steel, plus a fair amount of desperation. Henri Giraud was 63 years old when the Germans captured him during World War II and took him to "escape proof" Konigstein Castle. Giraud spent two years planning the perfect escape.
First, he addressed the part of prison escape that every other escapee forgets--what you'll do once you're outside the walls. The prison was right there in Germany, after all, and he didn't even know the language. So, he convinced his captors to start classes in how to learn German.

Next, he needed to coordinate with somebody on the outside. His letters to and from his wife were read and censored by the guards, but they somehow developed a system of embedding coded messages that the captors never picked up on. Next, he got ahold of a map and memorized every detail of the surrounding geography.

All right, now there's just the matter of the, uh, 150-foot drop outside the prison walls that had made escape utterly impossible for the last eight centuries.

He and a friend came up with some twine, thin stuff like they use to bind packages. They twisted it together, bit by bit, until they had 150 feet of it. It took a year.

Last, he got himself a Tyrolean hat.

Together, these preparations helped Giraud pull it off. Link -via Gorilla Mask

Subway to Tessellate Cheese?

For years, people have complained about the way that Subway places the cheese wedges on their sandwiches. This is best explained by a 2007 comic from Left Handed Toons. As we suspected, it was a policy designed to encourage customers to order extra cheese. However, what looks to be an internal memo from Subway Down Under hints that this policy might be changed effective July first. Link

Riding Bombs

When most of us think of someone riding a bomb, the image of Slim Pickens in the movie Dr. Strangelove comes up. But he was far from the first character to do so, as you'll see in this collection of photographs and art at Oobject. Link -via Jason Kottke
