I don't see how they could make those screening questionnaires any longer or more personal. I remember one time as I started to go through the routine...

Have you had sex in the last year with anyone who has been to eastern Europe?

Have you had sex in the last year with anyone who has been to Africa?

Have you had sex with anyone who uses IV drugs?

I could see another thirty or so questions like that, so I said, "Look, I haven't had sex with ANYONE in the last year! Can we skip all that?"

She looked at me sympathetically and said, "No. We have to ask each question individually. Regulations."

It might not be so easy to get another sign. And there are plenty of workers besides researchers in Antarctica. I used to follow a blog that belonged to a guy who washed dishes for a living for years at McMurdo.

Alex, when you said "I get child support" that sounds like you get a check every month. When I read it again it became clear you meant you UNDERSTAND child support.

But I have never known anyone in my life that received alimony. Just child support is touchy enough.

I've been in all those situations: married, divorced, widowed, childless, single mom, nuclear family, and blended family. Being a single mom is way harder than you could ever imagine unless you've done it. But it still beats an unhappy marriage. For me, it also beats childlessness, but that varies for other people.

Makeup makes a woman look like she's out of school and has a job -at least if that's the only clue about her you have.

I wonder how "competent" they would be judged to be if the makeup was applied badly!

That's OK, edself. I've had measles, chicken pox, and rubella that my kids will never have. Luckily, I've never had mumps or tuberculosis. When I was a kid, people were mainly terrified of polio, and I even knew a few kids who had to live with the aftereffects. So we all took our sugar cubes at school.
