Sculptures of Extinct Birds Made with Discarded Chicken Bones

It reads like the plot for a great horror movie, but so far this is just an art exhibit. Christy Rupp takes chicken bones from fast food restaurants and assembles them into now-extinct birds. These are Carolina Parakeets, which were last seen in the wild in 1913. They're back, and they want revenge.

There you go, Hollywood. Work with the idea. Report back to me when you have a script.

Transformers Ukulele

Paul Celantano can make a stringed instrument in any shape, even a cupcake. This ukulele with the Autobot logo transformers into...well, nothing. Still, I hope that he posts a video of himself playing the Transformers theme on it!

A Machine to Cook Potatoes with Human Body Heat

And while you're at it, whip me up some eggs to go with the hash browns. Surely this imagined future of cooking from a 1930 issue of Modern Mechanix is finally achievable in our time.

The Future of Staffing: Virtual Employees

VibrantNation.com is an information website for older women. Its editorial director, Susan Lee Ward, works hard and produces a lot of the content herself. But she doesn't exist. She's a profile under which the other site authors publish. Susan Lee Ward is "a summation of what our members tell us about themselves", so she serves as the embodiment of the site's target market.

Virtual employees could be everywhere on the web, even here. For example, if Alex Santoso, the "owner" of Neatorama, didn't exist -- if he was just a virtual construct -- how would you know?

As workplaces move increasingly online, expect more of this practice.

Doctor Who Chess Set

The rules get a bit wibby-wobbly timey-wimey, but the basic principles of Doctor Who chess are comprehensible by humans. deviantART user Eldalin Skywalker made this set with polymer clay pieces ranging between three and seven centimeters tall. Do you agree with her character choices?

A ground squirrel named Richardson loves to slip into his tutu and dance to Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto. And he's proud enough of his abilities to show them off on YouTube.

Ventilated Bullets

The Comp Bullet is a intriguing invention by an Italian firm of the same name. The bullet feature vents that, the company claims, increase velocity and reduce noise. Steve at The Firearms Blog writes:

According to the company, these vents reduce friction by allowing gas to lubricate the bullet as it passes through the barrel and then act as a muzzle brake as the bullet exits the barrel. They apparently also reduce smoke, increase velocity (a rocket effect as they leave the barrel) and reduce muzzle flash. In other words, they are miracle bullets. [...]

As for the muzzle brake and "rocket" effect claim, the physics is beyond me. I cannot work out how gas venting out of the bullet for a brief moment in time would have any effect on recoil. Surely because the bullet is not fixed to the gun any muzzle brake effect would slow down the bullet not the recoil of the gun?

Do you think they would work?

A Beer Holder That Blocks Incriminating Facebook Photos

We've all -- and by 'we' I mean my more inebriated co-bloggers at last year's Christmas party -- would like to avoid being photographed while relaxing in public. So this beer holder developed by the Argentine ad agency Del Campo Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi could come in handy. When a sensor built into this beer chiller detects a flash, it emits its own flash in order to overexpose any photograph:

The agency says the device, which has so far only been planted in regional bars, is a real product that has been field tested and actually works. “We placed several beer coolers in different bars in the North of Argentina,” says Maxi Itzkoff, executive creative director at Del Campo. “People took lots of photos that ended up being blurry beyond recognition and then uploaded them to social media anyway."

Stipple Portrait Composed of 3.2 Million Dots

A long time ago when I actually created artwork, stipple compositions with fine point pens were among my favorite media. But I never created anything remotely resembling the scale that Miguel Endara does. He duplicated a photocopier portrait of his father with 3.2 million dots. Watch a video of the process at the link.

Brain Food

Sara Asnaghi made nine life-size human brains from different foods. This one is made from ground chili peppers, which is good, because having chili on your mind constantly is a respectable state of affairs.

McDonald's Billboard Projects French Fry-Like Beams of Light into the Sky

The ad agency Leo Burnett, maker of clever campaigns like landmine stickers and human billboards, designed this glorious billboard. It is shaped like a fry box. Yellow lights projecting upwards like a pillar of fire guide the hungry forward from up to three miles away.

Competitive Snowball Fighting

In Japan, snowball fighting isn't just a pleasant winter pastime. It's a serious competitive sport known as Yukigassen or "snow battle." Two teams square off on a field about the size of a hockey rink. Victory comes through annihilating the other team or capturing its flag. See more photos and a video at the link. This particular photo, I should note, is from a match in Alaska, not Japan.

Dragon Sculpture Transforms into Ring of Flowers

This lovely sculpture by artist Tomoo Yamaji changes from a dragon to a ring of flowers without removing any parts. He presents it as a spiritual companion:

When we are threatened by evil, "it" will appear before us in the form of the dragon and prevent the evil with its fierce face and roar then bring peace to us. After that, "it" will transform into the form of the flower to continue quietly watching our peaceful life. However, we must remember that "it" will not always be on our side. Once we will be evil and bring the disaster, "it" will transform from flower into dragon and mercilessly attack us with its overwhelming power to prevent us.

Some Buses in China Have Emergency Bricks

Stop playing with that brick! It's not a toy, but a tool. Buses in Xian and Harbin, China come equipped with brightly painted bricks that can be used by passengers to smash open windows in the event of an emergency. But if you think about it, there are so many possible uses for emergency bricks elsewhere in everyday life.
