Simpsons Meal Cake

No, it's not a healthy, balanced meal -- although it certainly gives the appearance of one. This is a birthday cake from Paul's Creative Cakes to remind some lucky dad that he's showing his age.

Batmoose

When he was just a calf, Moose Wayne's parents were murdered by a pack of criminal wolves. Now he is, as artist Morgan Thomas depicts, the guardian of the forests of Gotham.

A wise man has achieved enlightenment. Others do not understand and scorn his insight. Thus it has always been for men of vision, and always shall be.

NUKEMAP: Visualize Blasting Cities with Historic Nuclear Weapons

NUKEMAP, a Google Maps application by Alex Wellerstein, makes the dangers of nuclear war personal. Move the marker anywhere in the world, then select a nuclear weapon. You can choose anything from the 20 ton Davy Crockett portable missile to the 100 megaton Tsar Bomba. The latter is pictured above detonating over Lubbock, Texas.

Transformers Wedding Ring

Specifically, a ring with the Decepticon logo. Why? Because some women go for bad boys. It's the adrenal rush of danger, I guess. To us Autobots, it's always "Let's just be friends."

Victorian Big Game Hunter on a Distant Planet

(Video Link)

Dr Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game remembers the vigorous life led by men of the British Empire. It was an age when daring Britons launched themselves into the space to face wild and savage aliens for Queen and Country. At least, that's how Greg Broadmore and students from the Media Design School recalled the period in this funny short film.

What Does Sloth Meat Taste Like?

I'm glad you asked! And a little surprised, honestly. But I'm not here to judge you, just answer your question:

Daniel Everett, a linguist who has spent more than seven years living with the Pirahã people of Brazil, agrees that unseasoned sloth is tough and slightly gamey, but he finds the meat palatable and vaguely reminiscent of pork.

But that's only if you prepare it properly, so take notes:

If you somehow find yourself in possession of a sloth carcass and want to eat like a tribesman, preparation is simple. The Pirahã singe off the hair, gut the animal, and roast chunks of muscle over a fire. When the meat is thoroughly cooked, they tear off pieces with their hands and eat it plain. For the American palate, however, a little culinary doctoring can go a long way. Everett prefers to tenderize the meat in a pressure cooker for 40 minutes, season it with cilantro, garlic, salt, and chili sauce, and add it to tacos.

Zombie Princess Leia and Stormtrooper

Luke had better be careful kissing his sweetheart/sister! Flickr user vill4no snapped these two cosplayers (presumably) at MegaCon 2012, a convention in Orlando, Florida that ended yesterday.

Coffee Cup Stain Art

Hong Yi's subject matter is fairly conventional: portraiture. But her methods are extraordinary. We've previously watched her compose a portrait of a famous basketball player using just a basketball and paint. More recently, she spilled coffee into a saucer and planted the cup repeatedly on paper until she composed a picture of actor Jay Chou. At the link, you can watch a video showing how she did it.

A Braille-Like Texting App

Researchers at Georgia Tech have designed a smart phone app that allows users to type in an alphabet similar to Braille. It can't display messages in Braille, but it does enable users to send text messages without having to see the interface:

The app uses a gesture-based solution by turning the iPhone's touchscreen into a soft-touch keyboard programmed for Braille and requiring only six keys, making it a practical solution for the limited screen real estate on smartphones.

The key feature of the BrailleTouch technology is the use of the six-key configuration so that the keyboard fits on the screen and users keep their fingers in a relatively fixed position while texting. This design allows users to hold their device with the screen facing away from them cradling the device with their palms or pinkies and thumbs – and to type with a majority of their fingers, identical to typing Braille on a standard keyboard.

At the link, you can watch a video demonstrating how the app works.

It's hypnotic. If were put into a continuous loop, like the Enterprise ambient engine noise video, I could watch this all day.

The Blue Family

For more than two centuries, the Fugate family has lived near Troublesome Creek in eastern Kentucky. Many of them, in the past, were blue. Yes, blue. As a result of inbreeding, the combination of a recessive trait caused them to be born with methemoglobinemia, a rare genetic disorder that turns the skin blue. Read more about this unique family known as "the blue Fugates" at Now I Know.

Stained Glass Twenty-Sided Dice

You can't afford a critical fumble when you're playing with these dice. Instructables user Casey Borders provides instructions on how to make your own stained glass d20s at the link. You'll need an icosahedron jig, a interesting tool that I never heard of before.

Garfield Cupcakes

Bakerella, a fan of Garfield comics for decades, made these fondant wonders. I suspect that turning into a cupcake would be Garfield's worst nightmare.
