The Sailor Avengers

"Sailor Hulk, I think that now might be a good time to get angry." Ann Marcellino imagined the members of The Avengers and Loki as Sailor Scouts. You can see her other images in the series at the link.

Watch a Zipper Truck Reposition a Median in Heavy Traffic

(Video Link)

Zipper Trucks are amazing machines that quickly pick up and move 1,500 pound blocks of concrete that serve as median barriers on San Francisco's highways:

Each 30-ton, 58-foot Zipper Truck is driven by a two-person team. As it passes over the barrier system, a series of wheels gently lifts each block off the street, funnels it through an S-shaped curve under the vehicle, and deposits the block into the other lane. The entire bridge-rearranging process should take less than ten minutes. When it is completed in the fall of 2013, the $26.5 million project will integrate with the zipper system already installed along the new Doyle Drive, to create a seamless, safe approach to the Golden Gate.

Watch the above video showing a Zipper Truck cruising down Doyle Drive in dense traffic.

Leather Throw Pillow Made from Old Shoes

Baptiste Viry gave new life to old shoes by sewing and riveting them onto a suede backing and filling it with feathers. I think that the laces are a nice touch that adds a bit of authenticity about the pillow's origins.

Hitler Pincushion

Stick it to the Fuehrer with this novelty pincushion sold in the United States during World War II. Note that it comes with the warning "Not endorsed by Hitler," so it's not an officially sanctioned product.

Tree House Fits the Neighborhood Style Perfectly

We've previously featured Benjamin Verdonck's stay inside a human-sized bird nest on the side of a skyscraper in Rotterdam. More recently, he built this tree house in Ghent. Other than one minor difference, you could hardly tell that it's a new addition to the neighborhood.

Woman Blames GPS after Driving Her Car into a Sand Trap

Perhaps after spending too much time at the nineteenth hole, a woman in Northbridge, Massachusetts drove her car into a sand trap on a golf course. She was unable to extricate herself without going well over par. This was, of course, not her fault. Her car's malfunctionaing GPS navigational system was to blame:

Northbridge Police Officer Randy Lloyd wrote in his report at the arraignment in Uxbridge District Court yesterday that [redacted--ed.], 46, of 427 Sutton St., “stated that her GPS had told her to turn left. She stated that this left brought her into a 'cornfield' and once she was in the 'cornfield' she kept driving trying to get out of her 'cornfield.' ”

Watercolor Painting of the Interior of a Car Dealership

Could anything be as beautiful as a car dealership? Well, yes, many things. But not when artist James Gurney has to wait at one while technicians service his car:

He pointed me to a waiting room, which had a coffee machine, some magazines, and a TV set. But I was tired of hearing about Romney and Obama. So I headed onto the sales floor. I found an empty chair next to the snack machine. I laid out my watercolor gear on a desk and got to work. [...]

The sales people seemed transfixed by their computers. One guy played digital solitaire. They took no notice of me. When I was finished with the painting, I showed it to them. They took photos of it with their cellphones to put on their Facebook pages.

Pinocchio Cake Pops Have Been Lying Shamelessly

I don't trust these cake pops made by Miss Candiquick. But their dishonesty does at least make them easier to handle. You can find her recipe at the link.

Bowfisherman Hauls in Record-Breaking 9-Foot Alligator Gar

Brent Crawford normally hunts grass carp on Lake Corpus Christi, Texas. But he and his equipment were abruptly put to the ultimate test when he spotted a massive alligator gar in a canal near his home. He waited for his chance and shot a line into it with his fishing bow.

This gar weighed well over 300 pounds and was 8 feet 9 inches long. It was, as such, much heavier than Crawford and began dragging him into the water. In Crawford's version of the story, even his dog got involved:

Bleux somehow knew what to do. Crawford's loyal fishing partner clamped down on the cuff of his jeans and planted his paws in a vain attempt to keep his master from being dragged farther into the canal, cellphone, boots and all.

You can read the rest of his well-told fishing story at the link.

CORRECTION 6/24/12: I got the weight and length of the gar completely wrong, greatly understating its size. That's fixed now.

When Did English Lose the Long Letter S?

Above is a selection from a 1711 printing of Milton's Paradise Lost. Notice that what appears to be the modern letter f appears in the place of the modern letter s. This is the "long s"--a typographical practice of past centuries. When did it fade away? Evan Soltas used Google's N-gram function to assess when "Paradife Loft" became "Paradise Lost". This is what he found:

The switch occurred over a century spanning 1750-1850.

Thanks for Clearing That Up

So those astronomy books that I just threw away weren't wrong? This newspaper correction, allegedly from the Ottawa Citizen, comes a little too late.

We Live in an Age of Wonders

Randall Munroe of xkcd demonstrates to us how greatly our knowledge of the cosmos has expanded just recently. Here's his scaled representation of all 786 known planets, most of which were unknown a few years ago. He reminds us of something that we could easily forget: "This is an exciting time."

Watch Archaeologists Walk an Easter Island Statue across the Ground

(Video Link)

How did the technologically limited native people of Rapa Nui move the huge stone statues for which the island is famous? Archaeologists Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo have an idea: the ancients may have rocked the statues back and forth with teams of people yanking on sturdy ropes. Watch them walk this 5-ton replica statue forward.
