With Dinosaurs, Nazis, and Cavewomen, David Hasselhoff's New Music Video Is 1980s Perfection

It's got dinosaur attacks, kung fu Nazis, robotic transforming arcade cabinets, primitive video games, and beautiful women dressed in animal skins. Therefore it is perfect.

David Hasselhoff's new music video "True Survivor" takes the form of an action movie in which our hero confidently takes on the world. The special effects and combat scenes are gloriously over-the-top. It's precisely what you would hope for from The Hoff--the man who made the 1980s so 1980s-ish.

This Rainbow Dash Electric Guitar Is 20% Cooler Than Yours

Phoenix Vaithilingam made this impressive electric guitar. It's composed of spruce, maple, and rosewood. Each of the four strings is a different color of the rainbow. He had limited access to a milling machine, so he designed the entire body and plotted the toolpaths in 23 straight hours of work. You can see a time-lapse video of its creation here.

Hippo Spotted in London

(Photo: Richmond and Twickenham Times)

Bushy Park, a Royal Park in southwestern London, is a lovely spot with trees, trails, and ponds. In one of those ponds, visitors recently reported seeing a hippopotamus. As hippopotami are terribly dangerous creatures--they kill more people in Africa than any other animal--park officials took notice. But they think that it's probably just a remote-controlled toy. George Odling quotes a park official in the Richmond and Twickenham Times:

He said: "We are unaware of specifically what it is other than we’ve had no reports of a hippo in the park...it’s probably remote controlled!"

Note that they're not saying this with certaintly.

The Ribbon Chapel

(Photo: Koji Fujii)

The Ribbon Chapel is a wedding chapel in Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshi Nakamura of NAP Architects designed it. The structure is contained within two separate staircases that intertwine as they ascend until they meet at the top. It's a great symbol of marriage that provides practical solutions for human movement during complex and well-attended weddings. The opaque staircases also provide shade from the sun that shines in through the full-length windows. You can see more photos of it at Design Milk.

Xena Bunny Costume

Bernadette Bentley is an actress and a master of cosplay. Most recently, she attended WonderCon in Anaheim, California. She does a great job of portraying the titular character from Xena: Warrior Princess, in part because she looks a lot like the Lucy Lawless, the actress who played Xena.

The Horror of Washing Dishes

(Books of Adam/Adam Ellis)

You've had a long day. But the house is a mess, so it's time to get to work. Eventually, you promise yourself, the work will be done. There will be a last dish. Then you can pop a beer and watch Daredevil.

But there's always one more dish. Oh, you think that you've found the last one? You're wrong.

The Goofiest Shoes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

I’ve mentioned before my earnest wish to visit New York City if for no other reason than to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which must be the greatest art museum in North America. Messy Nessy Chic has given me yet another reason to go: the Met has a collection of the weirdest shoes in the world, including this grassy sandal made by Beth Levine in the early 1990s. It's called “Barefoot in the Grass.” You can see a selection of other eccentric shoe designs owned by the Met at Messy Nessy Chic.

Star Wars as an Old Norse Saga

(Photo: The Community-Pop Culture Group)

Dr. Jackson Crawford of UCLA is a scholar of Scandianvian studies and Old Norse literature. He has faithfully restored the Star Wars saga from its original form before George Lucas set to work on it. Star Wars began not as a movie trilogy, but an Old Norse saga composed a thousand years ago. You can find the entire document here. Skip to chapter 17 to read the beginning of what fans refer to as Episode IV. It includes this introduction of the legendary Viking warriors Han Solo and Chewbacca:

Hani had another great treasure, and that was his ship, which he had gotten when he won a swimming race against Landó Kalrissiansson at Kessel Island. This ship was called the Thousand Year Falcon; it was the fastest of ships.

A Frisian man accompanied Hólmgöngu-Hani; he was named Tsiubakka. He was the hairiest of men and very big, he had blackish-brown hair and was rather chubby-faced and broad across the brows. Tsiubakka did not know how to speak Norse, but he understood what men said, and Hani spoke Frisian.

A Gallery of Passports from around the World

The investment company Arton Capital created a world passport index. It shows the covers of what appears to be every legally recognized passport in the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. You can sort them by location, alphabetical order, or color.

The site also includes a ranking of passports by “power.” This means the number of countries that a passport permits a bearer to travel to without special authorization. The United States and United Kingdom rest at the top with 147. The bottom tier is a tie between South Sudan, the Solomon Islands, the Palestinian territories, Sao Tome and Principe, and Myanmar at 28.

Man Pulls Driver to Safety from the Edge of a Cliff

(Photo: AP)

According to witnesses in Lewiston, Idaho, Matthew Sitko began driving erratically, then lost control of his SUV. He ran off the road and barely stopped before slipping over the edge of a cliff. He might have fallen down, were it not for a mysterious man who pulled him out of the window to safety. After securing Sitko from the truck, he disappeared. Local residents later identified him from the photo. The hero told police that he was trying to avoid attention.

Weightlifting Skateboards

Misha Petrick, an animator in Moscow, made these clever skateboard designs called Strongboards. They make effective use of the visual forms already present in overturned skateboards.

Tortoise in a Dress Walking through Tokyo

(Photo: @Hana_Tegoshi)

All pets need exercise, so it's prudent that this man takes his African spurred tortoise out on walks through the streets of Tokyo. There's little concrete information about the pair, but Rocket News 24 informs us that they've been spotted and photographed through the Tsukishima and Ginza neighborhoods. The tortoise sometimes wears a cute dress, but is always, sadly, off-leash.

George Lucas Tells Little Boy That He Can Get Married and Still Become a Jedi

Although the rule has not always been enforced, in general, Jedi aren't supposed to be married. They're supposed to live celibate lives of contemplation and service. This came as dismal news to 7-year old Colin Gilpatric. He wants to become a Jedi, but he'd also like to get married and have kids.

So Colin wrote to George Lucas and asked him to alter the Star Wars universe so that Jedi can get married. Lucas responded:

Senator's Frozen Ringtone Goes Off During Committee Hearing

Today, US Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas was attending a meeting of the Senate Finance Committee. The committee was addressing a weighty issue of trade policy, but Sen. Roberts just wanted to "Let It Go."

His phone rang. The ringtone revealed his love for the Disney movie Frozen. But the Senator's spokeswoman insists that he selected it for his grandchildren.

Uh huh.

Man Invents Shoe That Grows 5 Sizes to Help Millions of Poor Children

If you're a parent, you're familiar with this challenge: children outgrow shoes very quickly. That can become a serious problem for whole communities that are too poor to afford to replace children's shoes often. That's why Kenton Lee invented The Shoe That Grows.

It's a sandal that comes with snaps in the front, back, and sides. It can expand to 5 shoe sizes. The shoes comes in small and large varieties, so two pairs of shoes can meet a child's footwear needs from the ages of 5 to 15.

Because International, the charity which distributes these shoes, has a motto: practical compassion. It appears that they've found a way to exercise precisely that.
