Earlier this week, the people of the internet were delighted to look at a real frog that looks like the famous Muppet, Kermit the Frog. He is not the only real Muppet that dwells among us. Joe Hanson, a biologist and science educator, has rounded up pictures of 7 other pairs of fabric and flesh. These include a very persuasive Gonzo as a tapir and a sloth that looks like Oscar the Grouch. You can view them all here.

Technically speaking, Ziploc is a brand name. Whatever the brand, the design concept is the same: a bag that separates and reseals with a plastic zipper. Mechanically speaking, it's quite complex--more than you might think for a cheap, disposable product.
(Image: US Patent Office)
Danish inventor Borge Madsen developed the practical resealable bag in 1950. It's a zipper with tiny hooks. Outside runners help guide your fingers so that you align the two sections properly. Bruce Peterson decsribes the history and technology of the resealable bag in Wired:

When President Barack Obama was born in 1961, President Herbert Hoover was still alive. When President Hoover was born in 1874, President Andrew Johnson was still alive. When President Johnson was born in 1808, President John Adams—the second President and one of the original revolutionaries—was still alive.
So the U.S. is only 4 Presidents old.
The Washington Post created this chart to illustrate when Presidential lives overlapped. George Washington and James Buchanan lived at the same time. So do George. H.W. Bush and the late William Howard Taft.

Tyler S. Brain, a student at Mississippi State University, spotted another student in a lecture hall cooking bacon on an electric grill in the middle of class. In fact, he was in the front row!

The professor is, quite rightly, unperturbed. While at Starfleet Academy, Captain Kirk won the famed Kobayashi Maru simulation by cheating. He was given a special commendation for original thinking. This college student deserves the same treatment.

India’s famed Taj Mahal appeared on a street corner in London on Saturday. Local resident Tom McKenzie snapped this picture, but wasn’t able to find out who made it. It appears to be made entirely out of toasted white bread with the crusts removed.
I love it! The world needs more toast art.
After making an ice cream cone out of Rice Krispie treats, it occurred to Nick Chipman of DudeFoods that he could make something similar with Fruity Pebbles, the colorful Flintstones-themed cereal. He used a Rice Krispie treat recipe, but substituted Fruity Pebbles for Rice Krispies. So with butter, marshmallows, and a big heap of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, he made a complete meal that fits in one hand.
I wonder what other cereals would work well with this approach. Maybe big biscuit Shredded Wheat or Urkel-os.

Midway through the encounter, Bayne describes the experience as “the best day ever.” While at the Rapid Run Training Center in Morriston, Florida, she met a foal who was in the mood to cuddle. The foal gently pushed her to the ground, then lay on top of her. Bayne petted as the foal wagged her tail.
Bayne aptly wrote:
Horses have a way about them that touches my soul. Every now and again horse people come across a horse that places a mark on their heart. This one truly touched my heart and soul

It’s Tinder from the Gilded Age. You want to chat up a girl? You can drop a nice line on her or you can just slip her a card. Back in the 1870s and 1880s in the United States, gentlemen would offer these cards to ladies they found attractive. Often they consisted of formal invitations of acquaintanceship or offers to escort a lady home, which is why they were sometimes called "escort cards."
(Photo: Alan Mays)
Some men offered to escort ladies at great peril. They subtly boasted of their virile courage, saying that they would take risks to enjoy such esteemed company.

Others were downright risqué. Mr. Krout, for example, offers this card-sized résumé of amorous abilities, which he offers to demonstrate confidentially. This may repel ladies of quality. But when advertising your services, it be helpful to state exactly what you have to offer. You will attract the right sort of customer.
These three cards come from Alan Mays's massive photo gallery of acquaintance cards. Peruse and take notes--you may find something useful.

Scoot over and don't hog the covers, kid. And could you check under the bed and in the closet just one more time?
In just 10 hours, I can be safely at work where the lungless human head of doom can't reach me. I think.
Therefore rejoice! Sticky’s Finger Joint, a 2-shop chicken fingers chain in New York City, offers this ingenious meal that combines the sweetness of cotton candy and the saltiness of fresh French fries. Special orders feature caramel sauce, Pop Rocks, and happiness. It’s everything that you could hope for in a nutritious meal.

The Wayfarer is a high-end restaurant and bar in New York City. The bar has so many options that you can design a Bloody Mary cocktail from among 1,440 possible permutations. Tony Meverick reports for Thrillist:
Here's the deal: the base price per Bloody Mary is $12, which includes three options from the card. After that, each additional option is 50 cents. First you pick your alcohol (options like vodka, flavored vodka, chili liqueur, and more), then the base (traditional, spicy, tomato water, or the chef's favorite, Green Juice), then you choose what goes on the rim (things like poppy and sesame seed, paprika, celery salt, salt and pepper, and more), and finally, the topping (shrimp, jerky, roasted tomato, cheddar cheese, pork rind, and more). In other words, you'll probably have to have more than one to truly experience such freedom.
But I can find no evidence that you can get a Bloody Mary that includes an entire deep fried chicken. This seems like a serious oversight for a restaurant that wants to set itself apart from the proles.
P.S. This is how you mix a Miss Cellania:
1/2 cup of espresso
2 oz. Kahlua
2 oz. Tia Maria
Serve hot, then run away as fast as you can.
See that spot on the water? Yes, now we have definitive, scientific proof that a giant swimming cryptid has indeed made her home in the deep water of Scotland’s Loch Ness.
Google placed a panoramic camera to a boat to map the lake and took underwater shots for Nessie, who usually travels submersed. You can explore them here. Google does a very thorough job of anything it attempts, so it was perhaps inevitable that it would spot Nessie herself (warning: auto-start video).

It’s so picturesque that I want to go there immediately! Furore, a village on Italy’s Amalfi coast, is known for its fjord, which is called the Fiordo. This gorge cuts straight into the rock, bringing a narrow strip of the sea to a lovely sandy beach. The town is hidden inside this rift, which is why Furore is sometimes called the “town that doesn’t exist.” There, at the beach, you can rest in the shade provided by the mountains or cool yourself in the blue water.
If you’re a bit more adventurous, then you can walk across the bridge that connects the two sides, then dive 98 feet from the bridge into the crystal clear water. It hosts an international diving competition. You can see more photos at Amusing Planet.
Hyo Taek Kim is an artist and graphic designer who has gained a lot of attention for creating minimal representations of famous movies by displaying their dominant color schemes. Most recently, Kim showed us the colors of Disney animated movies. Now he’s done the same work with the 6 Star Wars movies and the trailer for the upcoming The Force Awakens. You can see them all here.
Corporal James Bass returned home to Durham, North Carolina after a deployment in Kuwait. He surprised his son Joshua, a third grade student Pearsontown Magnet Elementary School. While Joshua was getting his school photo taken, his dad sneaked into the view.
The photographer told Joshua that something went wrong with the picture and showed his camera to Joshua. Joshua then realized who was behind him.
