Finally! LEGO-Safe Slippers

(Photo: Piwee)

It looks like an ordinary LEGO brick. But in the hands of a careless child, it becomes a dangerous weapon.

If you're a parent, you know this because you've experienced the agony of stepping onto a LEGO brick with your bare feet. A physicist has explained precisely why they hurt so much, but you may not be that curious if there's one embedded in your arch right now. All you want to do is protect your feet.

LEGO understands, which is why the company has commissioned the creation of specially-designed slippers with extra padding on the bottom. The ad agency Brand Station has arranged for 1,500 pairs to be made prior to the Christmas season, when an ordinary home becomes a minefield. That's not nearly enough.

BB-8 Droid Quesadillas and 16 Other Star Wars Fan Foods

It's brilliant! And I have a chance of being able to make it successfully!

Jamie Harrington of the food, craft, and parenting blog Totally the Bomb made quesadillas that will let BB-8 roll right into your heart and stomach. She used flour tortillas, cream cheese, sliced cheddar cheese, a Mexican cheese blend, and black food coloring.

This recipe is at the top of a great BuzzFeed listicle of foods that Star Wars fans will enjoy, hopefully while obsessively rewatching the trailers for Episode VII.

The Hobbit Flipbook Drawn onto the Pages of The Hobbit

Flipbooks are a fun and underappreciated artform. We love them! And if you do, too, you may wish to visit the Undercover Festival of Flipbooks in Darlington, County Durham, UK. It takes place between October 23 and November 30. The Darlington Library is hosting it. Many artists have contributed by drawing flipbooks into the pages of print books, which the library staff has hidden in the stacks of their collection.

Mark Hughes drew this flipbook, which summarizes The Hobbit in the pages of Tolkein's novel. You can see other similar flipbooks at Aaron Hecht's Vimeo channel, including Stephen King's Cujo.

How to Fold a Fitted Sheet

(Truth Facts)

It's not at all complicated, despite the elastic corners. So there's no reason for your fitted bedsheets to come out wrong if you just follow this simple procedure. Visitors to your home will be impressed when they see your perfect domestic skills.

Jayne Cobb Wreath

He's the hero of Canton--the man they call Jayne. Wash understood the importance of Jayne's hat, which was a gift from the gunslinger's mother in the short-lived but much-loved TV series Firefly: "A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything."

Which is why it makes the ideal basis for a Christmas wreath. When visitors arrive at your home to share the season's festive mood, you want them to know who they're dealing with.

Etsy seller Laura Ducros is a dedicated browncoat. We've previously seen a dress that she crocheted with the colors and pattern of Jayne's hat. Now she brings us this wreath that gives you a similar warm and fuzzy feeling.

Anna's Creed

(Photo: Otafest)

The deadly Princess Anna stalked her prey at Otafest, an anime fan convention in Calgary, Alberta. This cosplayer unknown to me brilliantly blended the character from Frozen with Desmond Miles, the protagonist from the video game series Assassin's Creed.

Photos of the Boys Who Became The Rolling Stones

(Photo: Ninian Reid)

On the left is Mick Jagger, age 9. On the right is Mick Jagger, age 72. Despite the 63-year gap, the resemblance is striking. The eyes and the grin are the same. And at any age, he looks pretty sharp in formal attire.

Flashbak rounded up childhood photos of the members of The Rolling Stones long before they became famous. You can see Keith Richards at the age of 4, Ronnie Wood as an infant, and drummer Charlie Watts feeding pigeons when he was a toddler.

The World's First Car Vending Machine

Stick a coin into the slot. The machine activates and pulls a car out of its inventory, delivering it to you.

Jiggling it will not get you a second car. The designers were careful about that possible flaw.

This is Carvana, the world's first automated car vending machine. It's more of a promotional gimmick than a traditional vending machine, like the kind you might buy a soda from. The process is, however automated.

Go online and buy your car there. Then come to the Carvana facility in Nashville, Tennessee. Pick up a special coin designed for the process. Drop it into the vending machine and it will dispense your car. News Channel 5 (auto-start video) quotes Carvana CEO Ernie Garcia:

Out of the Crooked Timber of Humanity, No Straight Thing Was Ever Made

(Perry Bible Fellowship/Nicholas Gurewitch)

The hilarious and insightful webcomic Perry Bible Fellowship is gradually returning after a long hiatus. It was worth the wait. Pinnochio, Data, and the Tin Man would have been pleased to see the comic's scientists hard at work to help them.

Why Did This One Board Not Frost?

Redditor golftree has a composite deck. After a recent freeze, s/he found that one plank didn't cover with frost and is curious about why. The funniest proposal is from austin101123, who writes:

That board was probably placed upside down on accident, check for frost on the other side.

What's your explanation? Why did this one plank in the middle of the deck not frost over?

39 Steps to Being a Gentleman

(Image: BBC)

Gentleman's Life, a British magazine, lists the essentials on a quiz that I have failed miserably. For example, it is only now that I realize that I have been ill-mannered to gamekeepers at the estates where I have visited:

11 Tips staff in a private house and a gamekeeper in the shooting field

Horrors! I must amend this mistake immediately. On the other hand, I have met some qualifications:

30 Has read Pride and Prejudice

Many years ago, a lady once jokingly said that she would go on a date with me if I read Pride and Prejudice. I immediately did so and actually went on no fewer than two dates with her.

34 Sandals? No. Never

Of course not. Even my manservants don't do this in their private lives. If they did, they would not remain in my employment.

28 Knows when to use an emoji

And that time is known as "never."

How well do you rate on the test?

Backpacks Inspired by Baroque Architecture

Konstantin Kofta, a Ukrainian designer, has created Arxi--a line of backpacks that look like they've been sliced off restored Baroque buildings. These classical shapes are ideal because, Kofta explains, "the forms and forces are always in some sense of equilibrium." You can see more photos at Fubiz (translation).

School Benches Made from Upcycled Materials

The art studio To Make You Smile creates public sculptures that people can put to practical use. In 2006 and 2007, it made several benches from upcycled materials and placed them at public schools with the goal of encouraging students to think and act creatively. This one is my favorite. With the well-selected signs, colors, suspension springs, and welded imagery, it looks just like a school bus!

When the Army Put Price Tags on Its Equipment

(Image: The News-Herald of Franklin, Pennsylvania--Dec. 14, 1951)

In 1951, the US Army wanted its soldiers to be more careful with the upkeep of their equipment. Although they didn't have to pay for their arms, they should be mindful that American taxpayers did and treat it accordingly. So it circulated posters among American soldiers that illustrated how much common weapons and vehicles cost.

Weird Universe says that at least one Army Reserve center went so far as to put literal price tags on its gear. One soldier commented to a local newspaper that "It looks like a department store here."

Memo to Gene Roddenberry: Missing Star Trek Wigs

(Photo: UCLA Library Special Collections)

Rob Justman was a director and producer for the original Star Trek series when it aired from 1966-1969. In this memo to series creator Gene Roddenberry, Justman is perturbed about 6 wigs that went missing after the second season ended.

Four of them were made for William Shatner (Captain Kirk), one for Majel Barrett (Nurse Chapel), and one for Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura).
