Wine Cellar Built into a Staircase

Murray Berrill of Victoria, Australia remodels homes for a living. His most recent project is a wine cellar built directly into a staircase. It holds 156 bottles under temperature-monitored conditions. Berrill spoke to Bored Banda about the project:

Murray explained that maintaining structural integrity was the hardest part, but certainly not impossible: “There is a stud wall from the concrete slab to underneath each tread that runs down the middle of the stairs. An elephant could walk on it. That’s also where the draw slides are fixed so that the draws are anchored to the slab to minimize vibrations.” [...]
The flight of stairs is well-insulated and also comes with its own thermometer to track the temperature. Murray also has thoughts of installing some equipment that would keep the wine cool during the hotter seasons of the year. It took around a week and a half to build.

Berrill states that this project has gained so much viral attention that he may be building these wine cellars for a long time to come.

A Cactus Throne for the Desert King

Mexican designer Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers felt inspired by her own native land and the furniture styles of the Louis XV era to create a pair of pink prickly pear chairs. There are male and female versions available, as well as an ottoman.

These chairs are not quite as dangerous or painful to sit in as the Iron Throne, but are prettier.

Quarantined Man Climbs Mount Everest from inside His Home

John Griffin, 53, of Sussex, UK, just completed a grueling ascent of Mount Everest. He did so entirely within the confines of his 3-storey home. To reach the height of Everest, he climbed those steps 1,363 times. Griffin publicized his efforts in order to raise money for food banks in his country. Runner's World reports:

The lightbulb fundraising idea came to Griffin after joking to his wife Niri, a GP, that he’d have climbed the height of Mount Everest by the time the crisis was over. He realised that, while he might not be able to make it to Nepal, he could recreate a slightly less snowy version of the challenge by completing 41,000 uphill steps in his own house.

Rapping Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks

Yo, the Doctors are in the house and they're going to drop some sick rhymes on you. That's Dr. Seuss and Dr. Dre, whose works are now combined by Wes Tank. This media producer from Milwaukee says that Seuss and Dre were made for each other. CBS 58 quotes him:

"I would pair them with Dr. Dre beats because it was kind of a funny doctor and doctor thing." Tank said, via FaceTime from his home in the Washington Heights neighborhood. "But for some reason, the beats and the books just go together really well. Kind of scarily well."
Tank was asked to perform Dr. Seuss raps at an annual fundraiser at Bookworm Gardens in Sheboygan. He was booked to perform at birthday parties. He says people always told him he needs to put it on YouTube. He agreed, but he wanted to make sure it was done right.
"I'm very busy with video work most of the time." said Tank. "I don't really prioritize my rap career. But during quarantine, I'm kind of stuck in the house and I'm like this is kind of a perfect thing to do right now."

Tank also has videos for Green Eggs & Ham,The Cat in the Hat, and The Lorax.

Watch This Elderly, Disabled Woman Do Soccer Trick Shots

85-year old Victoria Slater of Shropshire, UK is down to one working leg since breaking her hip. But even with just one leg and while confined to a wheelchair, she can put the soccer ball anywhere she wants.

Slater lives with her son, Phil, and grandson, Kodi, the latter of whom can be seen in this video. The soccer pitch was originally his. But it's become grandma's obsession. The Daily Mail quotes him:

Phil said: 'She was heartbroken after what happened with my dad.
'We found a passion for football in her which came from my boy. We started getting her out in the garden and we both trained her up.
'The smile was back on her face, she was loving the activity and exercise and created a unbreakable bond between the three of us.

Florida Man Tries to Order Burrito at Bank Drive-Through Window

Don't expect good customer service at the Bank of America located in Spring Hill, Florida. When local superhero Florida Man passed out drunk in his car while parked at the drive-through window, the bank manager pounded on his window until he woke up. Florida Man asked for a burrito, as one should expect at Taco Bell or Bank of America--wherever he was. WFTS Tampa Bay reports:

Upon waking up, the driver asked the bank manager for a burrito before driving away after being informed he was not at Taco Bell.

Police caught up with Florida Man later. Then, instead of taking him to Taco Bell, they arrested him for driving up the influence of prescription narcotics.

Man Builds Gym with Trees and a Chainsaw

Zachary Skidmore liked his local gym. When it closed, he had to find an alternative. After 60 hours of work with a chainsaw and other power tools, he was able to turn trees on his property into a fully-functional gym.

And I really do mean fully-functional. Skidmore's home gym has everything, including a leg press, dumbells, a leg curl, a crossover machine, and, most impressively, a treadmill.

Dad Makes "Official" Name-Changing Form for Daughter's Cat

Game designer Neven Mrgan's daughter wants to change her kitten's name and do it properly. So he made a downloadable PDF form for that task.

It's an understated masterpiece of bureaucratic nonsense. Be sure to complete it properly in triplicate, keeping a copy for yourself and one for your pet's personal files. Notarization is not necessary.

A Dollhouse with a Functional Elevator

Yes, your Barbie Dreamhouse, has an elevator, but it's not motorized like a real, modern elevator. This one, built in 1912, does. Nag on the Lake dug up information about this masterpiece of craftsmanship made by a teenage boy for his sister:

The four-storey dwelling is housed in a repurposed glass-front display cabinet standing over six feet high. It was created in 1912 in Sweden by John Carlsson when he was just 18 as a gift for his sister Eva. It comes complete with detailed Victorian furniture, lights and decorative objects and tiny porcelain people. Attached to the outside is a working elevator made of metal and powered by an electric clock motor.

CDC Recommends Wearing Anime Shirts to Socially Distance Others Away From You

Anime Maru is a satirical website. Think of it as The Onion, but for anime fans like me. Today, it offered practical advice that may save my life during this pandemic:

The CDC stated that in several initial trials, wearing an anime shirt in public was shown to cause significantly reduced public interaction. Those who wore a shirt with an anime character printed on it claimed they noticed far fewer people approaching them than usual. Shirts with large graphics of underage characters in suggestive poses or attire were found to be the most effective. Shirts which featured only logos or less pronounced imagery had limited effect on distancing the wearer and were only recommended if nothing else was available.
“The idea is to create a feeling of immense awkwardness around the wearer,” stated CDC Director Robert Redfield. “To be effective, the shirt should cause others to worry about accidentally being associated with you should they stand too close for any period of time.”

If you don't have an anime t-shirt, then an anime hug pillow--a dakimakura, as we otaku call them--will do just as well. In fact, it would probably be even more effective and also permit you to take your waifu out in public.

Shooting Locations for Forrest Gump

Then & Now Movie Locations is one of the great, hidden treasures of the internet. The resident blogger, Paul S., travels around the US, photographing locations of iconic scenes from famous movies, most commonly horror movies.

Most recently, Paul traveled to Georgia, South Carolina, Utah, San Francisco, and Washington, DC to track down shots from the 1994 film Forrest Gump.

Where does Forrest wait for the bus at the beginning of the film? He's at Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia. You can see more at Then & Now Movie Locations.
