Ty Karnitz: Bring Back the Codpiece!

At The Art of Manliness, Ty Karnitz makes the case for reviving the codpiece as a modern, manly fashion:

Any man boldly sporting a codpiece as he walks into a room will instantly gain everyone’s full attention. But remember, the codpiece is supposed to accentuate and not dominate, so even though everyone is likely to be staring at you, keep the focus on them. Maintain eye contact and talk about others. Following those simple rules will also help draw a lady’s attention.

Karnitz includes pictures of modern codpieces. What do you think? Does the codpiece deserve another chance as a popular fashion?

The Catcher in the Rye, Starring Robin

Holden Caulfied, the Boy Wonder of Gotham City, has a lot of growing up to do. And it doesn't look that Batman is going to help him much. Read the whole piece at Andrew Makes Comics.

Sarah Gallejo knows a winner when she sees one. This young girl was chosen out of the audience at Disneyland's Jedi Academy to participate in a stage show. She went off script and, rather than fighting Darth Vader, joined him.

Human Curling

Certainly adding an additional human element to curling could make it even more exciting, as this commercial by the Buzzman agency suggests. The speedos, would, probably and unfortunately, be necessary.

Michael Paul Smith's Amazing Miniatures

What a lovely photograph from yesteryear, eh? Not quite.

It's a model. Specifically, it's one of the astoundingly detailed models of 1950s American homes, cars, and street scenes made by Michael Paul Smith. His work is being compiled into a new book called Elgin Park, the name of a fictitious Pleasantville-like town which his models and photographs depict.

Sorting Algorithm Explained with a Hungarian Folk Dance

(Video Link)

Sapientia University has created a series of online videos that illustrate different sorting algorithms using folk dances:

What you have to do is just check that they are in fact implementing the algorithm correctly. The dancers have numbers stuck on their front and they do seem to look down and examine the value on another dancer before performing the dance routine dictated by the algorithm.

Embedded above is the bubble sort, as explained by a troupe performing the Hungarian "Csángó" dance.

Man Discovers That The Old Cup That He's Been Using as a Plinking Target Is Worth $99,000

When he was a boy, John Weber, 70, was given an old cup by his grandfather. He assumed that it was just a worthless piece of brass and occasionally used it for target practice with his air rifle. Eventually, Weber decided to have it appraised, and experts concluded that it was a 2,300-year old Persian gold cup of enormous value. It sold at auction for £50,000 in 2008.

Austin Kleon's Tea Stain Drawings

Austin Kleon, who calls himself "a writer who draws", leaves wet tea bags on sheets of paper and draws cartoons using the shapes that they make. He explained his creation process in an interview by saying:

“Not-knowing what image will show up is part of the game,” said Kleon. “You get to let your subconscious take over. It’s like a Rorschach inkblot test. You could show the tea stain to 100 different people, and they’d see 100 different images.”

Denny's Offers Bacon Sundaes

The Denny's restaurant chain understands that everything can be improved upon with the proper application of bacon. That's why its chefs are now offering maple syrup sundaes with bacon bits sprinkled on top and between the layers:

Bacon makes a classic ice cream sundae even more awesome. We start with maple-flavored syrup, and a scoop of rich, creamy vanilla ice cream and then a generous sprinkle of our diced hickory-smoked bacon. Add another sweet layer of syrup and vanilla ice cream topped with even more bacon and a drizzle of syrup.

Be sure to look for other bacon-y goodies in our Bacon Store. Question: do you think that "Bacon" would make a good baby name?

Saudi Arabia Plans to Build Mile-High Building

Saudi Arabia's proposed Kingdom Tower will rise to 5,280 feet. That's a full mile. If completed, this building in Jeddah will cost $30 billion to build and will contain apartments, hotel rooms, and offices in its 12 million cubic feet of space. The above graphic compares the structure to the Petronis Tower (center) in Malaysia and the Empire State Building (left) in the US. Currently, the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, which is 2,700 feet tall.

Periodic Table of Storytelling

deviantART user ComputerSherpa created a periodic table as a means of organizing the major tropes that can be found in popular stories. Pictured above is one small selection. When ComputerSherpa offered this to his classmates for critique, one cleverly suggested that it be used as a dartboard.

Hungry

Crafter Moxie does a lot of great work, but this felted critter grabbed my attention and made me laugh. It's part of an ongoing series called "Hungry", featuring odd monsters finishing off human meals.

Baby Hummingbirds in a Nest

Alek Komarnitsky learned that hummingbirds had nested at a local golf course and took several high-resolution photographs. Here are the two babies, almost ready to leave the nest. The housefly on the branch gives you a sense of the scale.
