The Old Man of the Lake

Crater Lake is a pristine body of water set inside a caldera in Oregon. One noteworthy feature of it is a thirty-foot long log that has been drifting around in the water for more than one hundred years. It's called the "Old Man of the Lake":

It was first discovered in 1896 by a man named Joseph Diller, who, six years later, would later publish the first geology of the park. He noted the presence of a large piece of wood which was completely untethered, able to move throughout the lake as dictated by the wind and waves.

The Old Man's movements can be erratic and extensive. In 1938, researchers tracked the Old Man's movement over three months, beginning in July, and by the end of the observation period in September, the Old Man traveled over sixty miles. In order to keep boats safe, those who sail on Crater Lake, as a matter of course, advise their fellow boat pilots of the Old Man's position.

R2D2 Lamp

Instructables member Nylanan is currently building a full-size replica of R2D2. As a result, he's been seeing visions of the droid in everyday objects, such as this lamp. He cut vinyl panels to size and stuck them on the lamp. Link -via Geek Crafts

Sliced Steel Images

A Korean artist named Chan Girl Park creates sculptures out of steel cross-sections of his subject matter. Each assembly is held together with perpendicular rods. He also welds steel nuts together to form smooth surfaces for figure studies. You can view a Korean-language description of his work at the link, or a gallery of some of his finer works at Colossal. Jaws/Peanuts Mashup

After making a popular mashup of Popeye and Indiana Jones, cartoonist Chuck Forsman decided to recreate scenes from the movie Jaws as though it was a comic strip by Charles Schultz. Read the whole thing at the link. Link -via Nerdcore

New Cologne Lets You Smell Like General Patton

Well, who wouldn't want to smell like Old Blood and Guts? Here's your chance. The US Army has licensed a cologne inspired by General George Patton:

It’s advertised as a woodsy blend of lavender, citrus, coconut, cedar, sage, tonka bean, bergamot, lime, and the ad copy says it will “elicit feelings of majestic woodlands and endless horizons.”

The US Air Force has one, too. It's called "Stealth". The Marines' cologne is called "Devil Dog".

98-Year Old Woman Earns 10th Degree Black Belt

A few years ago, we mentioned that Keiko Fukuda of San Francisco is a judo master, despite advanced age, arthritis, and triple bypass surgery. Now, at the age of 98, she's been awarded the highest rank in that martial art:

Only three people in the world, all men living in Japan, have ever reached that mark.

The martial arts promotion by USA Judo brought 98-year-old Fukuda to tears at the women's dojo where she still teaches in Noe Valley.[...]

She gave up marriage and left her homeland to dedicate her life to judo, fighting gender discrimination that kept her at lower belt levels decades longer than men less skilled than she.

The Diarrhea Dance

(Video Link)

This video was is part of a series designed to teach Japanese speakers the English language. Songs and dances help reinforce vocabulary lessons, including this very practical dialogue between a sick person and a passerby willing to call an ambulance. Also, it's an exercise video. Stand up and dance with me. Come on! -via Geekosystem

Batmobile Limousine

Well, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire. Why should he drive himself around? This Batmobile was spotted in New York City and was probably based on a Corvette. Video at the link. Link -via DVICE | Photo: Autogespot

GLaDOS Cosplay

GLaDOS, the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System that appears in the Portal video games, is a rather non-humanoid robot. But deviantART member Silverstar42 created a convincing costume of her for the 2011 Otakon in Baltimore. Link -via Super Punch

Super Mario Bros. Swing Dancing

(Video Link)

Morgan Day and Emily Wigger definitely deserved the "Golden Budgie" award at this year's National Jitterbug Championships. Their swing dancing routine got increasingly geeky by incorporating theme music and elements of game play. -via Comics Alliance

His Sidekick is an Archaeopteryx

The next Batman movie is being filmed in Pittsburgh. So students at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh decorated one of the city's 100 fiberglass dinosaurs -- your city has those, too, right? -- in a Batman costume. Link -via The Mary Sue | Photo: Anirrudh Koul

The Price of Gas These Days

A friend of redditor xxlizzle was given this receipt by his/her waitress. Question: was this a punitive toll levied against the customer, or a paid service provided by the staff?
