Musician Harmonizes with His 1-Year Old Self

(Video Link)

Publio Delgado, a Spanish musician, wrote "Dou hua," a guitar and percussion piece, in 2012.

Or that's what he thought. Video footage of him singing in the bathtub when he was 1 year old reveals that he's had the melody rolling around in his head for a long time.

In this invigorating music video, Delgado harmonizes with himself, adding an instrumental backdrop to the vocals from his much younger self.

Farming Tools Made By Women, For Women

(Photo: Green Heron Tools)

When Ann Adams and Liz Brensinger created Green Heron Farms on their property in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, they promptly experienced a serious problem: many of the farming and gardening tools commonly available were made for men's bodies. In particular, they expected users to have a certain height and weight that Adams and Brensinger didn't have.

So the two launched Green Heron Tools, a company that designs and sells farming tools built with women's bodies in mind. Civil Eats explains why these modified tools are important:

“Before, a shovel was a shovel, with a handle that was usually too tall for me to use with any real dexterity and a blade that often cut into the soles of my shoes over time as I dug,” says Liz.

She adds: “I’ve met people who feel like using a different tool expresses weakness, and I think when I first moved into this field, I felt similarly. It’s an ego thing, [but] not realistic when you look at the science and see the differences in our body structure.”

“The HERShovel has completely changed the way I use this type of tool,” says Danielle Marvit, a former organic grower and herdswoman, who is currently the production manager for Garden Dreams Urban Farm & Nursery in Pittsburgh. “It has been great for my body, and it is the most efficient shovel I have ever used.”

Kids Discover That Bologna Is Adhesive, Make Art with Their Lunch

(Video Link)

For all of these years, we've been eating bologna wrong. Toddler siblings Tyson and Lilly have discovered the right way. They found that the meat product is naturally adhesive to flat surfaces. So they trimmed it into shapes with their teeth, then fixed it to the walls of their home.

There's a lot of potential in this art form. An inventive artist like Hong Yi could work wonders with bologna.

3 Young Cancer Survivors Recreate Viral Photo

Two years ago, Rheann, 6, Ainsley, 4, and Rylie, 3, were all fighting cancer. Photographers Lora Scantling and Christy Goodger shot them holding and providing each other with emotional support. They inscribed the picture with the sentiment “Sometimes strength comes in knowing that you are not alone.”  This image touched many hearts and went viral across social media.

We have good news: all three girls are in remission. Scantling told the Today show that the trio are doing well:

  • Ainsley continues to be monitored through monthly blood work but remains in remission and is "enjoying the springtime."
  • Rylie gets scans every three months, but continues to get stronger. "She has left the hospital and now enjoys her days in Pre-K, gymnastics, dance and T-ball."
  • Rheann, the oldest of the group, permanently lost her hair from dozens of rounds of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Her eyes also droop slightly because of where her brain tumor was located. "The good news is she is a happy 8-year-old with an active life. She loves to ride her bike, hang out with her school friends, and she loves to play with her sisters," Scantling said.

Scantling photographed all of the girls again, this time holding a copy of that famous image.

Donut Mug Cakes

Do you like to start the day with a cup of coffee and a donut? Kirbie of the food blog Kirbie’s Cravings is most of the way there with her donut mug cakes.

She microwaved cake batter inside mugs, then used a cupcake corer—a clever tool that I had not heard of—to cut out the hole in the donut. She spread a chocolate ganache over the top and added sprinkles to create an almost cartoonish-looking donut. Yummy!

BB-8 the Car

The Toyota Corolla is surprisingly effective in the sands of Jakku. Even BB-8 has trouble keeping pace.

Redditor dubsallday saw this great car mod inspired by Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. S/he also made a recording of it rolling forward in traffic. You can watch it here (auto-start).

Who does it belong to? You can investigate by following the hashtag printed on the side of the car: #ISpyBB8.

The Ol' Ketchup through the Straw Prank

(Image: unknown)

Oh, yeah, I am definitely doing this to my wife the next time we go to Whataburger!

This is the first time that I've heard of this prank, but it's been recorded for YouTube at least a few times. Sometimes people use hot sauce instead of ketchup, which is an even better choice.

For Sale: The Chair that J.K. Rowling Sat on While Writing Harry Potter

(Photo: Heritage Auctions)

It was on this humble throne that the great J.K. Rowling sat while composing the first two Harry Potter novels. Rowling acquired the chair for free while living in poor conditions in Edinburgh.

She personally decorated it, then donated it for an auction in 2002 that benefited child abuse victims. It sold again in 2009. Now it's up for sale again at Heritage Auctions in New York City. The Daily Mail quotes Rowling about her memories of this chair:

"This was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed," Rowling wrote in a letter accompanying the chair, the auction house conducting the sale, Heritage Auctions, wrote on its website.

The Stereotypical Dystopian YA Novel

You're still reading paranormal teen romance novels? Those are so 5 years ago. The strongest market is in dystopian young adult fiction. That's what the cool grown ups are reading these days.

Why is it so popular? For your typical teenager, real life is a dystopia. And, ideally, he can heroically escape it and possibly liberate his friends.

The twitter account Dystopian YA Novel pokes fun and this genre and its sometimes worn-out tropes. Here are some of the best tweets from it.

Wasps Built These Colorful Nests with Colored Paper

Mattia Menchetti is a graduate student in biology at the University of Florence in Italy. He specializes in the study of the social wasp (Polistes dominula). This study is not one of merely science, but also art.

Menchetti says that the cellular nests of wasps are natural wonders. All they need to gain human notice is a bit of flair. So he gave captive wasps pieces of colored paper, which the wasps then used to build their nests. You can see more photos here (translation).
