John Farrier's Comments

@Joseph -- yes, a bit. The source for this story is ultimately a portion of a Wikipedia article without a footnote. But I did find similar photographs from this nuclear test program in two sources on Google Books. That was as much fact-checking as I was willing to do, so I decided to insert the word "allegedly" into the text.

OMG this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen

Once again, I can rest peacefully tonight knowing that, in a small way, I made the world a stupider place by linking to this thing.

The video should be re-scored with the attack theme from the movie Jaws. As it is, the music doesn't convey the menacing ambiance that, from the title, is clearly the producers' goal.

Yes, that would be great. It's a pity that there wasn't more information available. At any rate, flexible touch screens are already in development, so we could see a functional version of this sculpture within a few years.

Star Trek was really progressive for its time and Roddenberry had to argue to have women on board at all.

But it would have been particularly awesome if, even for only a moment, Uhura had to take charge during a crisis. The image of a Black woman in the captain's chair in the late 60s would have been great.
