Over at Neatorama, we have a lot of scientific-minded readers, many of whom aren't particularly impressed with some of the art projects we post here. Hopefully this microbial art will be an exception though as it takes some scientific materials, bacteria and Petri dishes, to make some really cool designs. Check out works from a variety of bacteria artists over at Flavorwire.
Do you love Johnny Depp movies? Do you love Dr. Seuss? Well then, I assume you'll be lining up to go see the new Seuss biopic being produced by Mr. Depp that will also star -Johnny Depp.
Personally, while I love the actor and the writer, I just don't see Johnny's eccentric character acting style working for Dr. Seuss. What do you guys think?
You probably already know that a lot of celebrities are vain, but it's hard to tell just how self-obsessed some people are until you learn how much they are willing to insure their own bod parts for. Mariah Carey, for example, has her legs insured for $1 billion dollars.
I've always wondered though if an insured celebrity gets fat, does that enable them to collect insurance money?
Have you ever wondered how your city's economy would compare to a small country? Well, if you happen to live in one of America's larger cities, you can now find out thanks to this fascinating article on The Atlantic. Take LA for example:
With a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $737.9 billion, the LA metro's economy is bigger than Turkey's ($732.2) and slightly smaller than the Netherlands' ($782.3) -- the equivalent of the 18th largest nation in the world.
If your city isn't listed, where do you think it might fit in?
Fans of traditional English breakfasts can certainly appreciate just how delicious this one looks. There's just one problem -this is actually an elaborately disguised dessert platter.
The beans are white chocolate coated biscuits in an orange and strawberry coulis, the black pudding is chocolate biscuit cake, the sausages are peanut butter coated sponge wrapped in caramelised rice paper, the egg is a creamy panna cotta with lemon curd, the streaky bacon is brandy snap and the hash browns are crispy fried brioche pieces.
Usually, clerk errors are not good things. Even if it is an error in our favor, the best we can hope for is a free grocery item turning up in our bag. But for one woman in Georgia, a clerk's error ended up resulting in a $25 million winning lottery ticket. That's because she asked for a Mega Millions ticket, but the clerk gave her a Powerball ticket with the same numbers. Luckily, the woman decided not to return the ticket and ended up becoming the state's newest millionaire.
I know we've posted a few cool Lord of the Rings LEGO creations before, but this 8' wide model of Isengard might just be the most impressive one yet. Built by LEGO masters OneLUG, this monstrosity weighs over 145 pounds and uses 22,000 bricks.
I don't know about you guys, but I'd love to have a batch of these wampa cupcakes. There are also cool wookie ones if you prefer. They look pretty easy to make, so even though there are no instructions, I think you could make your own just using the pics as a guide.
Don't think for a second that Google's business is limited to internet services. Indeed, they have their hands in a variety of industries, most recently, they've been testing out the beer-making business. That's right, Google has paired with Dogfish Head beer to make their own Belgian Dubbel beer called Urkontinent.
The final brew included some impressive ingredients sourced around the world: Wattleseed from Australia, toasted amaranth from South America, green rooibos from Africa, myrica gale from Europe, and Hive Plex Honey from Google’s own California beehives. Taken all together, the beer is described by Dogfish as being hearty, with notes of coffee and chocolate covered cherries. Also, it packs more than double the average alcohol content of average beer.
To be fair, Google's not making any money from the venture, they just want to see how the process works and to use the beer's creation as a marketing tool. If you saw some Google beer, would you try it?
I know I post a lot of Disneyland stories, but that's because the park is just so darn fun. BuzzFeed's collection of staged Splash Mountain pics are definitely worth a look for those of you who also dig Disneyland -and those of you who just like silly pictures.
To be fair, I'm not entirely sure that a velvet painting of Admiral Ackbar belongs in an article titled "10 Crazy Pieces of Crap On eBay Right Now." Personally, I think it's pretty awesome. Even so, a lot of the other items certainly do belong there. Check out the rest over on Oddee.
If you've ever wanted to make your own nyan cat scarf, now you can with the help of this pattern available for sale on Etsy. Of course, if you can't knit, you'll just have to deal with admiring this picture instead.
No, I'm not making a lame joke about the band Counting Crows. As it turns out, crows can recognize symbols used as numbers.
A new study suggests that crows can recognize symbols that represent quantities of items. At Japan's Utsunomiya University, crows were shown two containers. Only the container marked with five symbols contained the food. The researchers trained the crows to identify the food container 70% of the time.
There were only eight crows involved, so it's not really conclusive, but it's still interesting.
