Animals No Longer on the Endangered Species List

If you follow news on endangered species, it can get pretty depressing to see so many animals facing extinction. But not all news about endangered animals is bad news. In fact, on TopTenz, you can read about 10 animals who have been removed from the endangered species list -including the panda that has served as an icon for conservation of endangered species since the WWF chose the bear as their icon in 1961. And while we so often hear about poachers decimating rhino populations in Africa, their cousins in India have also been taken off the endangered species list in the last decade.

There might still be a lot of animals that need our help out there, but articles like this are a reminder that we can make a difference and bring animal populations back from the brink. So see the whole list over at TopTenz.

Polluted Ghost Towns Caused by Environmental Disasters

Conservatives may hate the EPA, but it was created for one very good reason and that is that pollution and environmental disasters can not only destroy the planet, but everyone living on it. This All That is Interesting article shows just how dangerous pollution can be by featuring five different ghost towns that have been destroyed by environmental disasters. For example, Centralia, Pennsylvania, a small town that has been burning since the coal mines below the city caught fire in 1962:

While exact causes of the fire remain disputed, analysts agree that a 1962 fire tore through the town’s abandoned coal mines and has not yet stopped. Residents became aware of the fire decades later, and in 1984 Congress allocated more than $40 million to relocate Centralia residents — many of whom did not see the risk that the fires posed.

Then-governor Bob Casey condemned all Centralia estates in 1992, but backlash from Centralia citizens kept Centralia’s zip code alive until 2002.

So check out the full story of Centralia as well as four other cities destroyed by environmental disasters over on All That is Interesting.

A 1933 Version of New Order's "Blue Monday"

(Video Link)

In celebration of Blue Monday's fifty year anniversary last year, Orkestra Obsolete did a cover of the song using only instruments that were available fifty years before it was released -in 1933. Instruments used include a glass harp, a pump organ, a dulcimer, a zither and a musical saw. The result is surprisingly accurate and entirely unique at the same time.

How to Remove a Stripped Screw

Just about everyone has had to deal with a stripped screw at one point and depending on how bad it's stripped, the process can be pretty simple or infuriating. Fortunately, thanks to Instructables, now you can try five methods to deal with a stripped screw, which should make the process a lot less frustrating. A simple rubber band can help in most cases, but sometimes you need something a little more extreme. I've actually had to use the "cut a notch" method before and while cutting the notch can be a pain, the removal afterward can be worlds easier.

So check out the full list of ideas on Instructables.

Famous Pigs on Instagram

Pigs are surprisingly intelligent animals that make excellent pets. In fact, they're very similar to dogs as far as personality goes. And while porcines may not be as popular as pooches, they still have their loyal fans.

This Mental Floss article by our own Miss C features 15 of the most popular pet pigs on Instagram. Aside from reading their individual stories on the article, you can also see their profile links to see more of their pictures and see just how adorably endearing a pet pig can be -like Bitsy the Mini Pig above and Kana the Surfing Pig below.

A Small List of the Crimes Committed By The Gang in "It's Always Sunny"

(Image via Dana Robinson [Flickr])

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is delightful to watch particularly because it's fun to see Charlie, Mac, Dee, Dennis and Frank do horrible things and continue to never grow from their experiences. Any fan of the show knows that while Charlie may know some bird law, the Gang as a whole seems to be completely unaware that they are constantly committing crimes -many of which are serious felonies.

That's why this list of many (though hardly all) of the crimes on It's Always Sunny is so damn entertaining. It even includes the potential sentences for each of the crimes and unsurprisingly, if the Gang was convicted, they'd be spending a whole lot of time behind bars.

You can see the whole (very long) list here.

Things You Might Not Know About the Eiffel Tower

(The French Connection shirt available on the NeatoShop)

As a Neatorama reader, you probably already know a bit about the history of the Eiffel Tower, but there's still plenty you probably don't know as well. This Travel and Leisure article can help fill you in on a few of those secrets you might still find surprising.

For example, did you know that Gustave Eiffel didn't actually design the tower? Or that Hitler ordered the tower to be destroyed? And do you have any idea what's lurking below the tower's south pillar?

Learn the full details of these secrets and more at Travel and Leisure.

Your Perfect Dessert Based on Your Zodiac Sign

We already covered what cocktails you should order based on your zodiac sign, but now you can find out what dessert you should be eating based on your birthday. Tablespoon put together the list of zodiac-based desserts, but while they all look delicious, I can't say that they're totally accurate. I know I (a Scorpio) might enjoy hot fuge icebox cake, but I know my Gemini BF would prefer something with fruit on it or even just a classic cheesecake to a chocolate cheesecake swirl bundt cake.

So how about you guys, is your recommended dessert a winner or as off as a crummy horoscope?

You Can Spend Your Retirement Wasting Away Again in Margaritaville

Parrotheads everywhere rejoice -Jimmy Buffett's famous Margaritaville restaurant chain will soon have a retirement home equivalent. Unsurprisingly, the senior-housing development will be built in Florida -Daytona Beach, to be specific.

Known as Latitude Margaritaville, the home's residents will have access to the same amenities as traditional retirement communities, including a gym, pool and recreation programs, but also food from the Margaritaville restaurant chain, a beach shuttle and live music performances which will inevitably include a number of Jimmy Buffett impersonators.

The community’s 6900 homes will have access to a gym, a pool, arts and education programs, a beach shuttle, and a 200,000-square-foot shopping center. Model homes will be available in 2018.

I think I know where my mom will be spending the rest of her retirement. If you're like her, you can sign up for updates on the official website.

Why You Shouldn't Let Your Cat Watch Star Wars

You always thought your cat was just begging for love in a pesky, annoying way when he circles around your feet. As this Oatmeal comic proves though, he actually watched Star Wars and believes he finally found a way to take down his oppressors.

Last Night's Other Oscar Flub You Might Not Have Heard About

By now you may have already heard about how Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey at last night's Academy Awards and announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner despite the fact that Moonlight actually was supposed to take home the title. But that wasn't the only embarassing mistake at the event -the in memoriam segment also featured a picture of someone who is very much still alive.

Australian film producer Jan Chapman was shocked to see her image used in the reel rather than the image of her collaborator, Janet Patterson, who died in October. On the upside for Chapman, she is not only alive and well, but also getting a lot of publicity from the mistake. You can read more about the producer at Heavy.

As a side note, If you haven't see the Best Picture mixup yet, you can see the whole trainwreck here (skip to the 1:50 mark to see the frantic faces in the background as the awards staff tries to fix the mistake):
