Man Calls Cops When He Heard Meows Inside The Recycling Bin. Turns Out The Cat Was Battery-Operated

Alan McElligot was at a recycling bin dumping old clothes. When he dropped an old pair of shoes in the bin, he suddenly heard the cries of the cat inside. Alarmed, McElligot immediately called the police to get the cat out of the recycling bin.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene and agreed that there seemed to be the sounds of a trapped cat -- possibly two cats -- inside the container.
"One of the police officers suggested we drop food in there in case the cats had been there for a few days. So I went to Sainsburys as I had my car nearby and bought wet cat food," McElligott told Deadline News.

But when the fire brigade used their heavy tools to open the bin, they did not find signs of the cats. What they found instead was a battery-operated cat which was made by FurReal Friends. McElligot remarked that the cat made “very convincing meows.”

McElligott said the firefighters and police officers had a good laugh at the outcome of the unusual rescue.
"The two community officers, three police officers and the two firefighters started laughing," he said. "I went red faced and apologized. We all then left as quickly as possible."

Still wholesome.

Turns Out That All Crash Bandicoot Games Are Canon

Almost 22 years after the release of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, a new game has been added to the numbered Crash games — Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. But what about the other Crash games? Are they non-canon? Canadian Guy Eh discusses this matter in this video. Although I guess this won’t matter if you enjoyed all Crash games.

Well, what do you think?

Creating Advanced Solar Panels That Can Extract More Energy From Sunlight

A team of researchers led by Minjoo Larry Lee, an engineer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has found out that by layering advanced materials atop traditional silicon could maximize the efficiency of solar panels and make these capable of absorbing more energy from sunlight. The findings of their study are published in the journal Cell Reports Physical Sciences.

"Silicon solar panels are prevalent because they are affordable and can convert a little over 20% of the sun's light into usable electricity," said Lee, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Lab affiliate. "However, just like silicon computer chips, silicon solar cells are reaching the limit of their abilities, so finding a way to increase efficiency is attractive to energy providers and consumers."

Co-op Mode Will Soon Be Available In “Ghost of Tsushima”

If you’ve ever played or watched some gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima, then you know what I’m talking about when I say that the game is beautiful and immersive. Players, however, are looking for some features that are not in the initial release: the ability to start the game over, and the ability to play it with your friends. (Just imagine you and your friends as Japanese warriors killing a horde of Mongolian soldiers).

If you’re one of those people who are either waiting for a New Game+ feature, or a co-op feature, then there’s this good news for you: the wait is almost over.

Sucker Punch has confirmed that the game’s co-op Legends mode will arrive October 16th as part of a free version 1.1 update that also includes a New Game+ single-player mode. As promised, you can play either two-player story missions (with twists that require teamwork), four-player survival missions and even an MMO-style raid.

Sweet!

There Are Now Cheaters in Among Us

Cheaters are now in the game Among Us, and they are ruining the game for everyone. Some cheat by contacting other players on another channel. While that already takes the fun out of the game, there are others who take the step even further. These people cheat using hack tools that give them the ability to move fast, identify who the impostors are, or kill the non-impostor players instantly and without having to wait for the cooldown (the time before you can use an ability again).

Because of this, there is 0 mystery left.
What confuses me is that they don't get any incentives or rewards for hacking and winning. They most likely just get outed as a hacker and no one wants to play with them anymore.
They're either just very twisted or bored.
The game developer, InnerSloth is made up of just three people so it will definitely take some time to fix the hacking issue.

Hopefully, this will not drag the game to the ground, as there are many players who kick these cheaters out when they see one.

Locals of A Chilean Town Guide Lost Elephant Seal Back To Sea

Using some cars, plastic sheeting, as well as a large tarpaulin, local residents of the Chilean town of Puerto Cisnes, along with the Police and the Chilean Navy officials, successfully guided a lost elephant seal back to the sea.

The huge animal managed to lumber down ten blocks of a residential area of Puerto Cisnes, in the country's southern Patagonian region, before returning to its natural habitat with a little bit of help from the locals.
Other Good Samaritans threw buckets of water over the confused animal to keep it hydrated.
[...]
“It was a great effort. The seal is safe now and out of danger from humans and dogs that could do it damage.”

Ex-Girlfriend Sneaks Into Man’s House, Cooks For Him

When it comes to a typical Japanese anime, you’ll usually encounter at least two types of characters: a “tsundere” and a “yandere”. The former is the character who is cold at the start but warms up as the series progresses. The latter, on the other hand, expresses intense love through insane, or even violent, means.

Just as there are real-life tsundere, there are real-life yandere, too, and this story is an example of the real-life yandere.

Here’s the translation of the accompanying note:
“Long time no see, ex-boyfriend!
Do you know who this is?
I slipped into you and your girlfriend’s little love nest.
Is she cooking good food for you?
It’s been a while since I’ve made a homemade meal for you, so I did my best to whip some up!
I’ll slip in every now and then from here on, so eat up *3”

Ah yes, the old “break into your ex-lover’s house and leave them a meal that you made on the table along with a cryptic note” method of communication. Something that perfectly normal human beings do every single day!
…right?

Some Japanese netizens commented that this is a terrifying story. Others commented that it’s better than having convenience store food every day.

As far as @hanahanakaidou’s response to the situation, this is what he had to say when someone asked if he’d contacted the police:
“For now, I’ve just decided to eat the meals.”

Leveling Up Biometric Authentication

Fingerprints and facial features are two of the most popular methods in confirming a person’s identity. But perhaps in the near future, this method — which is scanning finger veins — might soon be used for biometric authentication. This might also be integrated in smartphones soon.

“The 3D finger vein biometric authentication method we developed enables levels of specificity and anti-spoofing that were not possible before,” says Jun Xia, from University at Buffalo in the US, lead author of a paper in the journal Applied Optics.
“Since no two people have exactly the same 3D vein pattern, faking a vein biometric authentication would require creating an exact 3D replica of a person’s finger veins, which is basically not possible.”

I don’t know if this is an intended pun or not, but this sure is clever and cute. It makes me wonder where the bee’s wings went, however.

Authorities Entice Runaway Emu Using A Pear

September 30. Haverhill, Massachusetts. A woman who temporarily cares for animals in need of homes was in the process of transporting an emu named Kermit to a farm in Maine. Suddenly, a gust of wind opened the gate where Kermit was being held, and the emu took its chance and ran away.

Haverhill police spokesman Capt. Stephen Doherty said a call came in at 9:16 a.m. for an "emu running toward Walnut Square (School)."
The bird later took strides on its long legs over to nearby 17th Avenue, where it was met by police and animal control officers, eyewitness Brianna Smith said.

Fortunately, the authorities were able to capture Kermit safely, thanks to their secret weapon: a pear.

The bird calmed down after being given a pear from a nearby pear tree and was carried to safety.

Now that’s what I call negotiation.

Batzorig Vaanchig Sings With His Daughter

Batzorig Vaanchig is a renowned musician. He is a master of Tuvan throat singing (a type of singing in which the performer has to sustain a low note and sing a high note at the same time) and he uploads his performances over at his YouTube channel. But this performance that he recently posted is unlike the others, for this time, he sings with his daughter.

Seated beside his little girl on the family sofa, Vaanchig plays the tovshuur, a Western Mongolian lute with two strings, as he treats her to some incredible Tuvan throat singing.

Very wholesome.

Irish Court: “Subway Bread Isn’t Bread”

The Supreme Court of Ireland has ruled that the bread baked and sold at Subway cannot be legally defined as bread. The reason? It has too much sugar.

The ruling came in a tax dispute brought by Bookfinders Ltd., an Irish Subway franchisee, which argued that some of its takeaway products - including teas, coffees and heated sandwiches - were not liable for value-added tax.
A panel of judges rejected the appeal Tuesday, ruling that the bread sold by Subway contains too much sugar to be categorized as a “staple food,” which is not taxed.
“There is no dispute that the bread supplied by Subway in its heated sandwiches has a sugar content of 10% of the weight of the flour included in the dough, and thus exceeds the 2% specified,” the judgement read.

The judgment has stated that the law makes a distinction between “bread as a staple food” and “fancy baked goods.”

Subway disagreed with the characterization in a statement.
“Subway’s bread is, of course, bread,” the company said in an email. “We have been baking fresh bread in our restaurants for more than three decades and our guests return each day for sandwiches made on bread that smells as good as it tastes.”

Is DNA-Based Diet The Best Diet?

We all have unique DNA. The different variations in a person's genes affects the way his body metabolizes nutrients. To put it simply, it can be said that our genes have a hand in the way we handle food. With this in mind, it is only reasonable to think that we all should have a personalized diet, and this personalized diet could be made possible because of nutrigenomics, the science that deals with the relationship between the human genome and nutrition. Some critics, however, believe that this idea of a personalized diet is oversold.

This begs the question: is diet based on our DNA the best way?
