When honeymooners Teri and Jeff Hester went diving off the Baja California peninsula in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico, they found themselves in the middle of an astonishing sight: a "tornado" made of fish!
"We were swimming along and saw a small band of Jacks heading away from us, so we followed them," Jeff told Caters News, "That small band slowly grew bigger and bigger, until out of the distance, this massive fish tornado appeared. I was awestruck. I had never seen anything like that before in my life."
Here's John Goodman in the
1990 movie Arachnophobia. Because, you know, posting a picture of a spider in a post about people who are afraid of spiders is just cruel.
If you're afraid of spiders, don't blame yourself or your upbringings. Blame evolution instead!
A new study by Joshua New of Barnard College, Columbia University and Tamsin German of University of California Santa Barbara suggests that "spiders have posed such specific and immediate threats" to our evolutionary ancestors that our visual system has developed a mechanism to rapidly identify images of spiders.
In the study, to be published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, New showed images of spiders and other modern threats like hypodermic needles, as well as other animals like houseflies to 252 people. Most spotted the spiders much more rapidly.
"This demonstrates that some evolutionary-relevant threats are highly-specified and can evoke what is perhaps best termed 'reflexibe awareness': an immediate and elaborated perception sufficient to guide an adaptive behavioral response," New added.
"Humans were at perennial, unpredictable and significant risk of encountering highly venomous spiders in their ancestral environments," New said to The Sunday Times, "“Even when not fatal, a black widow spider bite in the ancestral world could leave one incapacitated for days or even weeks, terribly exposed to dangers. Detection, therefore, is the critical arbiter of success in such encounters — any improvements to the sensitivity, vigilance, reliability and speed of faculties for their detection would have been of significant selective advantage."
So the next time a spider give you the ooies, you can blame your genes.

Today is not only Pi Day (3/14) - to people in the world who keep the calendar in the slightly illogical* month/day/year format (USA! *Sorry the rest of the world: your logical day/month/year format means no Pi Day. There's no 31st day of April, nor is there the 14th month of the year. Hah! So take that, logic!

A few years ago, artist Natalie Fletcher moved to Bend, Oregon, and came across an ad for a body painter when she was looking to find a job. Despite having no experience at all, she applied ... and when they asked for examples of previous work, she thought, "Oh, crap! I better paint some bodies!"
That's how Natalie's journey as a body painter started. Since then, she's created many wonderful body paint artwork, including these trippy "Just an Illusion" optical illusion series below. There's no digital enhancement of these images - Natalie painted these freehand with an airbrush on the back of her boyfriend Todd's body:

London needs a new bridge to span the River Thames, so the call is out to architecture and design firms from around the world to submit their greatest (and most outlandish) ideas for the bridge.
And submit they did to the Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge Competition! So far, 74 design firms have submitted their designs, which you can view over at the NEP Bridge Competition's website.
The designs range from sublime arch bridges to outrageous curved bridges that look straight out of sci-fi movies! Here are some of our favorites:
