The nomenclature of flu viruses can be quite confusing. The H and N stand for surface proteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) and the numbers denote variants of the proteins.

The problem is that if a flu virus with similar virulence and infectivity occured now, the ease of global transportation would ensure that the disease would spread everywhere within a very short time frame.

In Black Death and 1918 Flu Pandemic, pockets of civilization survived by basically "walling" themselves off the rest of the world. Villagers posted sentries to shoot any strangers on sight coming into the village.
