I'm always surprised to find that the actor who became an overnight sensation actually had working in minor roles waaay before the break out movie/TV show. That's just the nature of show business, I suppose.
Indeed, the first issue of Captain America comic came out in March 1941, right after Germany formed the Axis alliance. The wartime patriotism fueled the comic's sale - at its height it sold nearly 1 million copies a month (more than Time Magazine!).
