Escher-Inspired Origami

Everyone recognizes M.C. Escher's famously impossible staircases, angles that inspire confusion and wonder. His most famous works have been referenced in pop culture since forever, and now the challenge to recreate these works in three dimensions has origami artists doing incredible things with paper. A rendition of Escher's Relativity is shown above, but Kuriositas has a gallery of others. Link

Beethoven's Love Letters

This letter to an unnamed "Immortal Beloved" was found in the personal papers of Ludwig van Beethoven after his death in 1827. Though there's debate over whom the letters were written to, there's not much debate about whether or not Beethoven had it bad for the woman. A snippet:
My bosom is full, to tell you much — there are moments when I find that speech is nothing at all. Brighten up — remain my true and only treasure, my all, as I to you. The rest the gods must send, what must be for us and shall.

Your faithful

Ludwig

Interesting Modern Bank Designs

Typically a stolid brick-and-mortar institution, these new architectural designs (some built, some in progress) are taking banking to a new level of cool. From Tokyo to Oslo (my favorite), these banks incorporate open planning, natural light, cool angles and plenty of interest. (See what I did there?) The full gallery of the 13 coolest modern bank designs is on WebUrbanist. Link

Orangutan Saves Distressed Baby Bird

(YouTube link)

An orangutan saves a tired baby chick with a leaf, then inspects it afterward to makes sure it's all right. There's not a ton of info available about this video (for instance, which zoo this is or when it was filmed), but the important takeaway here is that orangutans are both extraordinarily compassionate and also kind of gross, as evidenced by the first 40 seconds of the clip. How many times did you think the orangutan was going to eat the bird? I'm not gonna lie--I held my breath a few times.

Man Takes Wife to Visit Family

Ned Nefer is very much in love with his wife, Teagan--so much so that he's pushing the 6-foot wooden mannequin across upstate New York to spend a weekend in the woods with her.
Nefer, 38, says he's married to a mannequin named Teagan, and the kooky couple is traveling 70 miles from Syracuse to Watertown on foot, the Watertown Daily Times reported.

Or at least Nefer is walking. The Syracuse native is pushing his 6-foot wooden wife in a wheelchair across upstate New York.

"This is definitely one of the oddest things I've come across, but he seems very happy," said Lisa Spear, principal social welfare examiner for the Jefferson County Department of Social Services. "I wouldn't classify him as dangerous at all,"

Nefer's relationship is one that's built on trust - and lumber. He told the Daily Times that Teagan was only a head when they first met. But he built her a wooden body and claims they were married on Oct. 31, 1986, in California.

According to Nefer, they "both really love the outdoors," so he's toting along 16 disposable cameras to record the couple's weekend retreat. I expect they'll have a nice time.

Apple Ads by Matt Groening

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, teamed up with Apple in 1989 to try and sell computers to college kids. The artwork for the "Who Needs a Computer Anyway?" booklet came from Groening's book, School is Hell. It seems an odd pairing, but it was reprised later by an Etsy seller's unauthorized Homer Simpson iPhone decal. There are a few more of the pages from "Who Needs a Computer Anyway?" on The Daily What. http://geeks.thedailywh.at/2011/06/10/matt-groening-apple-ad-of-the-day/

The Internet Makes Us Creepy

(YouTube link)

"Two Boys", a new opera at the ENO London Coliseum, highlights the profoundly weird behavior we engage in online. Watch as this guy takes his Facebook and Twitter activity to the streets. "Do you want to be my friend? Can I poke you? What's your comment?" If you're going to be London-bound sometime between June 24 and July 8, you can pick up tickets to the show on the Two Boys website.

350,000 Books Saved from Burning Now to be Burned

What happens when you rescue over a quarter-million books from the incinerator? You have to buy another house to live in, first. Then you have to figure out what to do with all the books when they start to tear your house apart.
When Shaunna Raycraft learned that her neighbor planned to burn 350,000 books, she decided to take over the collection herself. After all, her neighbor’s husband was a collector and many rare books–including a first edition of Black Beauty–could be found in the sprawling stacks. But now Raycraft and her husband might be forced to burn the books themselves because they don’t know what else to do with them.

They tried selling them on eBay. They tried selling them to other collectors. They even tried selling them to used bookstores. But no one wanted to endure the arduous task of sorting through the books.

Apparently they never seriously considered donating the books, though, because now the plan is to burn them anyway. Bookworms all over are unimpressed--a #savethebooks tag has been tracking the debate on twitter.

No "Like" Lost in Facebook Double-Cross

Facebook lets me keep in touch with colleagues, friends and my grandma. But one pair of divorcees used everyone's (least?) favorite social media site to destroy one another from afar in what turned out to be a pretty sneaky double-cross.
Angela Voelkert, 29, set up her ex by creating a false Facebook identity, 17-year-old "Jessica Studebaker." (By the way, that's a big no-no with Facebook's terms of service.) She used the profile to exchange messages with the ex, David Voelkert, 38 of South Bend, Ind. On June 1, Angela Voelkert used the information to apply for a restraining order against her ex-husband, who spent four days in custody until a judge dismissed charges yesterday.

The charges against David Voelkert focused on him allegedly placing a GPS device on his ex-wife's car to track her, for purposes of finding someone to "take care of" and "put a cap in her ass" for $10,000 — as revealed by these Facebook messages.

But, it seems Voelkert was onto his ex-wife, and knew she embroiled him in a sting operation. And just as she was trying to use the information against him in the fight for custody of their kids, he did the same by feeding the faker with an elaborate plan.

Federal prosecutors were prompted to drop the charges after an affidavit emerged filed by David Voelkert days earlier, on May 25, that revealed he knew "Jessica" wasn't a real person.

"I am lying to this person," he stated, "to gain positive proof that it is indeed my ex-wife trying to again tamper in my life. Anything said in the chat to her from me cannot be held as the truth and I am chatting to this person in attempts to prove to my court that my ex-wife will not leave my personal life alone ... In no way do I have plans to leave with my children or do any harm to Angela Dawn Voelkert or anyone else."

He, in turn, wanted to use this as evidence in their ongoing custody case. His ex-wife used exchanges between him and "Jessica" dated May 31 as her evidence in obtaining the restraining order.

The charges were dropped and Voelkert no longer lists a "Jessica Studebaker" as a friend on Facebook.

Steampunk Laptops Now for Sale

If you have a handful of thousand-dollar bills and a penchant for all things clockwork, this might just be the best day of your life. Richard "Datamancer" Nagy is taking pre-orders for the Victorian Laptop for the first time. I'm not super interested in steampunk, but I do think Nagy's handiwork is rather beautiful. There are lots of pictures on the website, with styles ranging from hardcore industrial to streamlined deco. Link

Great Books by Morally Questionable Authors

If you're a bookworm like I am then you'll probably love this collection of books we love written by people we probably wouldn't. Yeah, Roald Dahl's on the list, right alongside a Nobel winner, a couple of notable poets, and a German metaphysical philosopher.
We like to think of our favorite writers as people we would get along with. So much of what attracts us to literature and philosophy is its author’s stated or implied worldview that it’s disturbing to find out that the writers we love have lived morally questionable — or even reprehensible — lives.

In the spirit of hating the author but loving the work, we’ve rounded up a collection of great books by poets, novelist, and philosophers with unsettling biographies.

More like FAKEbook Tattoo, Am I Right?

So it seems Susyj87's briefly infamous Facebook friends tattoo was a hoax. Not only was the tattoo a fake (a transfer that only lasted a few days), but the video itself was a promo piece for a company called Pretty Social that makes custom gift items using your Facebook photos. As much as I hated the idea of a woman walking around with 152 faces permanently stamped on her arm, I hate this even more.

FujiFilm X100 Cake

It looks a tad slumpy, but I don't doubt that a lot of work went into making this cake-based replica of the FujiFilm X100 camera. It was made by the bakery-owning wife of photographer Gary Cruz for his birthday. He has more images on Flickr if you'd like a better look. Link

The Protein Synthesis Dance

(YouTube link)

Apparently, high school in the 70s was more far-out than I thought. According to the YouTube poster, this was from a 70s-era science class video; the lecture at the beginning was removed to highlight the wicked groovy dance-athon. I can't say I learned anything from this, but everyone really seems to be enjoying their time in Biology II.

Thanks for sharing, Adam Lukey!
