Little Boy Has Adorable Reaction to a Butterfly Landing on His Nose

At first it's horror, then it's delight. This little boy wants to help his insect friend fly away and be free. The butterfly says goodbye with a kiss on his nose before flitting away.

Doctors Find a Tooth Growing inside a Man's Nose

(Photo: Dr. Hamed O. Al Dhafeeri, et al.)

A 22-year old man in Saudi Arabia had recurring nosebleeds from one nostril. He went to a hospital to find out why. Doctors stuck a camera up his nose and found the source of the problem: a tooth had grown inside his nose!

Sometimes people grow extra teeth, such as the teenager in India who had 232 of them. These doctors at the King Fahd Military Medical Complex found and removed only one, after which the nosebleeds thankfully stopped.

Brawl in the Ukrainian Parliament Neatly Illustrates the Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio or Fibonacci numbers is a sequence of numbers consisting of the sum of the two previous numbers. It is found in nature and has long been a standard of beauty in Western art and architecture.

Now behold this stunning photo of a fistfight that broke out in Ukraine's national parliament. Manzil Lajura noticed what makes this image so elegant and the combatants so graceful: their bodies fit neatly within the Golden Ratio.

Cocoa Farmers Taste Chocolate

(YouTube link)

Small farmers in Ivory Coast find out what their cocoa beans are used for when they taste a chocolate bar for the first time. Chocolate is out of their reach economically, and cocoa beans aren’t much without the sugar, milk, and other ingredients. But how could it be possible that these farmers don’t even know about chocolate? A commenter explained that chocolate is not part of the tradition of West Africa.

I know its weird, but in West Africa a bunch of the stuff we produce is for export only. It wasn't part of the traditional food, thus people never cared to eat it, or even knew how to finish production of it. The raw materials are just sent off.

It's not just cocoa. We produce coffee but don't roast it or drink it. We produce mangos, but not mango shakes. Chicken, but the variety for export is considered 'too soft' for the local palette.

It’s touching that the first thing the farmer does is to gather his friends and show them what chocolate tastes like. However, the kids will only get to see the wrapper. The video is a clip from the Dutch show Metropolis. You can see the whole chocolate episode here. Oh, and if you begin listening to the video because you know French, be aware that most of it is in Dutch. You may still need subtitles.  -via reddit

Wholock: The Musical

(YouTube link)

If you were going to mashup Doctor Who and Sherlock, you may as well make it a musical. It would have to start with a little number about one-upmanship before they can join forces. After all, neither one wants to be the sidekick! The lyrics are at the YouTube page. -via Viral Viral Videos

Cross Stitch Doctor Who 12-Sided Die

Each of the twelve enumerated incarnations of the Doctor appear on Robin's 5-inch tall dodecahedron which is charmingly cross stitched in vibrant colors. She writes that the numbers on opposing sides add up to 13, so presumably Peter Davidson is opposite Paul McGann, and so on.

The War Doctor is, I gather, not included. Could one created a 13-sided polyhedron with identical faces? I am not sure. One could certainly do so with non-identical faces. But I was hired to work at Neatorama for my good looks, not my math skills.

Walmart: Home of Faux Ice Cream

YouTube Link

Dan Collins, a disc jockey at KIKN Radio in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, got a tip that Walmart Great Value Ice Cream Sandwiches don't melt. Sitting outside on a sunny, 80-degree summer day, Collins watched the ice cream sandwich sit on a plate. Next to the sandwich was a scoop of Blue Bunny ice cream on another plate. After over an hour, Collins recorded the sickening results.

All of a sudden, I feel like hijacking an ice cream truck and seeing what other "delicious frozen treats" are suspect. Via Viral Viral Videos.

Inside a Fireworks Display

(YouTube link)

We’ve seen fireworks from the ground, fireworks from a distance, and fireworks in slow motion. Heck, we’ve even seen fireworks in reverse. Now Jos Stiglingh has taken the next logical step and launched a drone to take a video of fireworks inside the display! He was really lucky to get his expensive drone and camera setup back in one piece. This was recorded West Palm Beach, Florida. A bit of it is even in reverse. -via Digg

Father Daughter Movie Night

(YouTube link)

So it’s come to this: we’re watching a video of people watching a movie. Earl Reddell consented to watch The Conjuring with his daughter, but her idea was to set up a camera to catch their reactions. He says,

I loathe horror films, but my oldest daughter has a penchant for them. She thought it would be cute to record ourselves watching The Conjuring. My embarrassment is for your pleasure.

Ah, the things we do for our kids. I haven’t seen The Conjuring, but from what I hear, this audience reaction video is likely better than the movie  -or at least much shorter, as these are just the highlights of the viewing experience. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Fourth Doctor Scarf Dress

The fourth known incarnation of the Doctor, who was played by Tom Baker, was noted for wearing a very long scarf with various shades of red, brown, green, and purple (see below). Laura Ducros crocheted this ankle-length dress in imitation of it. She's also wearing a very thin version of the Doctor's scarf around her neck and his hat.

Bonus item: here's Ducros posing in her dress with Sylvester McCoy, the actor who played the Seventh Doctor.

Tiny Shark Bites Man in the Cutest Shark Attack Ever

(Video Link)

Carlos and his friends went scuba diving. Little did they know that an adorable menace lay beneath the surface, eager to feed upon human flesh--the tuna from the land.

(Cue Jaws music.)

The little shark pounced upon the human and began dragging him underwater. Or just grasping on to his swimsuit.

Carlos narrowly escaped. But as you can see from the end of the video, he's lucky that the shark didn't hit him a few inches to the right.

This Spinning Chair/Sculpture Lets You Rotate Your Views

Kate Brown, an interior designer in Arizona, developed the Etazin. It's a sculpture that you can find at Taliesen West, a house in Scottsdale that Frank Lloyd Wright designed and lived in. Etazin is inspired by moon gates, which are circular garden wall entrances found in Chinese architecture.

The sculpture consists of a series of steel rings, the largest of which is eight and a half feet wide. There's a padded bench in the interior which visitors and students can use for lounging or contemplative purposes.

Book Bikes Are Tricycle Bookmobiles

Book bikes are a recent and clever innovation in library outreach. They're bicycles or tricycles that have been modified to carry and display books and other library materials. Pictured above is one operated by the Denver Public Library. It carries popular books and is a wi-fi hotspot. A librarian rides it wherever people congregate and sets up shop. Thanks to the wi-fi connection, patrons can also get research assistance and download ebooks.

Here's a book bike run by the public library of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Library volunteers ride it to playgrounds and parks and give away (not loan out, but give away) books to kids.

Would you like for your local public library to get a book bike?

Cat Welcomes Soldier Home

(YouTube link)

Who says cats don’t express happiness when their owners have been gone awhile? Finn the rag doll cat is excited that Nick is coming home from a military drill that took him away for some time. This scenario was delayed a bit to see how the cat reacts, so be patient. The door will open eventually. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

The 7 Types of Annoying Internet Commenters

Julia Lepetit and Andrew Bridgman give us seven kinds of internet commenters to watch out for, lest you be drawn into an unfruitful and frustrating exchange that will raise your blood pressure. See all seven kinds at Dorkly. They left out The Lurker, which is only outnumbered by those who don’t ever read comments. Then again, I guess The Lurker is not really a commenter, much less an annoying commenter -just someone who learned their lesson about fruitless engagement.

We really should do a list about the different types of “Wonderful Commenters,” especially since the regulars here at Neatorama are several of those types.
