yet another waste of time, money, and resources. i work in the traffic center for AM commute at WHIO and i could tell you that accidents and backups are caused by people not driving the speed limit, and not taking into consideration the current weather conditions. then, because people don't obey the law, they end up behind someone who IS going the speed limit and slam on their breaks. the person behind them then slams on their breaks, and so on. moral of the story: drive the speed limit and allow one car length per 10mph between you and the person in front of you, ESPECIALLY on the highway. i know it's hard to allow so much space, but it will only benefit you. it allows you to slam on your breaks if the situation presents itself, it allows other vehicles to maneuver around you and others, and it's just more safe. PLEASE! we hate reporting fatalities... we just had one this morning, and it's very unpleasant. wear your seatbelt and drive safe, everyone!
i'm not about to read the whole thing, but the first couple pages gave me enough to be pissed off. there is so much wrong with advocating same-sex education in public schools. i'm not ok with private schools doing it either, but if parents really want to spend the money to have their child in a specialty school, hey.. it's their money.
first of all, boys and girls NEED to be educated together. it is essential that they be taught to deal with the opposite sex, as they will be submerged in a co-ed environment for the rest of their lives. when you separate them in childhood, they learn that boys and girls need to be separated because they're different. the article stated that they teach the children in different environments as well (different room temperature and yellow vs. blue walls). this advocates different treatment of the genders and instills an expectation that they they will always be treated this way for the rest of their lives. news flash: boys and girls are not treated differently in the real world; therefore, they should be treated the same in the social institution of school. the girls were being taught that oil and water separate, as they might notice when they're 'doing the dishes with mom.' they're being socialized into the domestic realm, that this is where girls are supposed to be: in the kitchen. aren't we supposed to be encouraging our little girls to succeed and NOT be oppressed by society? i mean, didn't the civil rights acts exist for this reason? on the other side, the boys were being socialized to spend their time outside when the teacher said "when you're out fishing with your father." this teaches the boys to be comfortable outside the home and be ready for work.
second, as soon as you separate them, you immediately begin to instill gender stereotypes in them, allowing them to later perpetuate that stereotype. children lead by example. they don't know what stereotypes are, but we do. they don't understand that boys and girls learn differently, therefore don't understand the reason for separation to begin with. all they understand is that they are being separated by 'boys vs. girls' and they will think that it's ok to do so in all situations. and what message will they receive when their parents tell them that boys and girls are actually equal? confusion.
third, it's likely they will be more insecure in adolescence than those boys and girls who were educated in the same classroom. yes boys and girls learn differently, but that's the case throughout their whole lives. what happens to the children when they're introduced to a mixed gender school? they will avoid each other. they will make fun of each other for being different. the boys will tell the girls to 'go back to the kitchen and make me a sandwich.' (trust me.. kids are cruel and WILL think of things like this to say). they will gang up because they won't know what else to do. yea i know this happens anyway, but that's just evidence that we HAVE been socializing our children to fit certian stereotypes via the media, school, home, stores, and even the law. but if we're doing it on purpose, it can only result in stronger feelings of separation.
i could go on forEVER about this junk, but moral of the story, this is not a good idea. we're supposed to be equal in all aspects of life these days (although i know people are awful and universal equality is still some reach away), and i think by supporting these schools we're supporting those traditional standards we've fought so hard to combat since the 60s. we've made such progress as a society and i have hope for the future, but not if parents are just going to destroy what barriers we have fought so hard to destroy.
that's exactly what i was going to say! not only that, but when you quit smoking, you tend to adopt more healthy practices, which may include brushing your teeth more often than when you smoked.
the friend who was left behind said their faces were more tan than usual... could it be because they were surrounded by snow and it is common to get burned by the reflection of the sun off of the snow? they never said anything about that...
donna: AND more sleep, as neatorama has recently mentioned, twice i believe. to build off of your comment-- a parent couple had two kids with behavioral issues. they would misbehave at home and were getting in trouble almost daily at school. they had ADD and ADHD and were having trouble getting to sleep at night. the parents disciplined them, but nothing was working. you know what they did? they changed their diets. the mom started doing research on what additives were in their food. she was soon disgusted to learn that all the food her children were eating was completely infused with chemicals and preservatives. they changed their diets by switching to only organic food. the children showed immediate behavioral results. they were calm, well behaved, weren't getting in trouble at school, getting better grades, were less violent, were falling asleep at night when they were supposed to, making friends, and no longer showed signs of ADD and ADHD. amazing. so yes, donna.. better nutrition might result in lower crime-rates.
here are FOUR examples that this blog is not the only one like it. it is NOT offensive. it is NOT racist. and it does not give white people a bad name. as a white person, i found them to be quite fitting. you guys have to realize that stereotypes stem from somewhere and they will always be perpetuated whether we like it or not. tough shit if that's not something you agree with. it would only be racist if the author was NOT white.
yea your tongue swells, but you don't notice anything until the next day when your mouth is full of tongue. i just hope that after the participants got pierced, coke gave them a hefty supply of drink, as that will be the only thing they will be able to eat for the next three weeks.
there are many contributing factors as to why our breasts are getting bigger, as mentioned by everyone else. 66% of adults are obese and women are more likely to fit that statistic than men. growth hormones are used in our every-day meat/dairy/egg/poultry supply, and assuming those ingredients are used in commercially processed food, growth hormones are present in those as well. yet another reason not to trust the FDA. we're hitting puberty at younger ages, allowing our bodies longer time to develop, therefore larger extremities. ALL clothing standards are changing as our population is growing both by number and mass. my boyfriend has been buying the same brand and size of undershirt for years. now all of a sudden, this same shirt is almost two sizes larger than before. it droops below his waist, hangs off his shoulders, and doesn't allow for a form-fitting appearance when worn under his regular shirt. it's ridiculous. the only way to combat these issues is to become fully aware and educated that even though our government agencies are supposed to be looking out for us, they're hurting us over time and not telling the truth. and, just because they're "taking care of us" doesn't mean we can trust their every move. this is not an anarchist statement, it's just proving that even government officials act like human beings: selfish, secretive, and money-hungry.
seriously though, why DO we keep getting research conducted on things we already know the answer to? "through extensive research and countless waking hours, scientists have finally concluded that clouds are the result of evaporated water!" THANKS, SHERLOCK! "next week we explore the mystery of socks: they may be made of cotton, and why are there TWO of them?"
oh that's awesome. i love themed parties and such. almost went to a samuel l. jackson party the other night, but it got too late and i was tired. i was planning on wearing a snake around my neck with airplanes in my hair, and my boyfriend was gonna wear a suit and tie (pulp fiction). i've also hosted a luau, a racism party (everyone dressed in their favorite stereotype and watched the movie "crash"), an "office" party (we watched all the episodes of the british office and had wine and cheese), a halloween party, a hairy buffalo party, marti gras party in yellow springs (i got to dress my brother up in drag.. it was awesome), and various others. oh man.. those were the days.
i was happy to see some bi-sexual asian action. i am neither bi-sexual nor asian, but it's always good to see heterosexual white people be looked over. DOWN WITH WHITEY! (i'm white, btw.. so it's not racist.)
oooo i just thought of this too-- i wonder how crime rates correlate with sleep patterns, considering people are less rational when they lack sleep. you would think crime rates would be higher in those regions people aren't getting enough sleep. the US is full of crime AND we don't get enough sleep... COINCIDENCE?!
i'm eager to find out how this compares to other countries. i do know that the US is a service industry these days and on average, we work more than any other country. europeans work an average of 35 hours a week, where we work 40. they are granted an average of 5 weeks of vacation and an extra one if they happen to have a baby that year. we get an average of 2 weeks. women are offered a full year of maternity leave as well as her husband, but not many males take the entire time. also, because they have a universal healthcare system, they can be issued a nanny to help take care of their newborn at no cost to the family. we work like dogs, yet remain surprised when statistics come out saying we don't get enough sleep. well DUH! we are also the most obese country in the world. the most selfish. the most discriminatory and racist against people unlike us. it's exhausting to be this evil! maybe we would be a better country if we got more sleep. i need more coffee...
