Restaurant Hands Over Its Official Twitter Feed to a Chicken

Chicken Treat, an Australian chicken restaurant, is insourcing its social media operation to Betty, a chicken. This highly trained hen, who is clearly setting herself up for some choice social media consulting gigs, will have complete control over Chicken Treat's Twitter feed until she spells a proper 5-letter English word. This, the company hopes, will secure Betty a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Elderly Veteran Fights off Knife Attack to Save 16 Children

(Photo: Pekin Daily Times/Robert Downen)

On Thursday, 16 children and several mothers had gathered in a meeting room at the Morton Public Library in Morton, Illinois. A 19-year old man wielding two knives walked in and, blocking the door, announced his intention to kill them.

Standing between him and the children was 75-year old James Vernon. Vernon talked to the criminal, maneuvered him away from the door, then signaled the kids to slip out. After they did so, Vernon made good use of the knife-fighting training that the US Army gave him 50 years ago. The Pekin Daily Times reports:

Brown slashed from the right towards Vernon, who blocked the blade with his left hand. “I should have hit his wrist. That’s how you’re trained, but it’s been half a century,” he said.

“First rule of combat: Be fast and vigorous,” said Vernon, who was trained but never served in combat. Vernon’s medium build was enough to overcome his smaller attacker.

“I grabbed him and threw ... Somehow he wound up on a table” with the knife in his left hand pinned under his body, Vernon said. “I hit him on the (right) collarbone with my closed hand” until Brown, his arm numbed by the blows, dropped that knife.

Vernon held the attacker down until the police arrived. He was badly cut in the fight, but is recovering.

My Guy!

This Russian guy comes home after six weeks away, and his dog is somewhat glad to see him return.

In the comments at reddit, someone mentioned that he was probably just gone to the grocery store, and the dog does this every time.

That’s a good dog.

The Candy Bomber Flies Again

(Image: KSL News)

From 1948-49, West Berlin was blockaded by the Soviet Union, which hoped to force the three Western occupying powers out of the city. In response, the air forces of the Western powers delivered essential supplies, including food and fuel, by air. The year-long Berlin Airlift kept West Berliners alive and free.

One of US Air Force pilots who participated in the deliveries was Lt. Gail Halvorsen. He wanted to provide some joy to the beleaguered children of West Berlin, so he began secretly dropping pieces of candy from tiny, handmade parachutes over the city, just before landing. Thus Halvorsen became known as the Candy Bomber.

That was 67 years ago. Halvorsen is now 92. He still flies now and then, including on Friday afternoon, when he dropped 1,000 chocolate bars on children in a park in Orem, Utah

The airdrop was made as part of a 3-day celebration for the Fourth of July. Halvorsen was a guest of honor at that celebration. When asked what the holiday means to him, Halvorsen replied, "The Fourth of July reminds me that if you want happiness in life, you serve others."

Oslo Is Building The World's First Bee Highway

Global bee populations have been in decline for quite some time, and yet we’re still scrambling to figure out how we can help them bounce back.

Some have turned to hybridization, others feel that limiting the use of certain pesticides and refraining from building cell phone towers in areas where bees thrive might be the answer, but Oslo, Norway has a far simpler idea.

Oslo is about to become the first city to install bee highways- a collection of flower covered rooftops meant to offer bees safe travel throughout the city. Here's what Agnes Lyche Melvaer, head of the environmental group behind this unique ecological project, has to say about the bee highway-

“We are constantly reshaping our environment to meet our needs, forgetting that other species also live in it, To correct that we need to return places to them to live and feed.”

If you're interested to see how the bee highway project is progressing you can track it all on the website Pollinatorpassasjen.no, where you'll find an interactive map and more about this awesome idea (all written in Norwegian, of course).

Image: Rossparry.co.uk / Ceri Oakes

Glenn the Jack Russell terrier and his best friend Buzz, the Staffordshire bull terrier were rescued last month and are now in the care of Stray Aid rescue in Coxhoe, County Durham, UK. Rescue staff soon learned that the inseparable pair immediately becomes distressed if parted. Nine-year-old Buzz acts as the eyes of ten-year-old Glenn. Buzz assists Glenn with finding his bed and food and giving him a gentle nudge in the right direction if he needs it. Their rescuers will only adopt out this super sweet duo together, thankfully.

Learn more about Glenn and Buzz, see additional pictures and get the link to inquire about adopting them here.

The UK comedy group Dead Parrot is up to the 5th episode of their YouTube Comment Reconstruction series (see episode one here). They wade into the cesspool of YouTube comments to find treasures so that you and I don't have to.

In this video, British actors Grahame Edwards and Eryl Lloyd Parry reconstruct an exchange between commenters Sudasha Patel and SGOR2047 under the video "Nelson Mandela is Dead - Official News." Both are paying their respects, in the strangest of ways. NSFW language. -via Laughing Squid

Most people have tried their hand at jumping rope once or twice in their life, generally because they wanted to see what was such a big deal on the schoolyard, or because they were lured in by the strange rhyming songs being sung by those pigtailed rope swingers.

A Cat's Guide to Caring for Their Humans

(Video Link)

This might be an ad, but when an ad is as clever and funny as this one Ze Frank created for Tidy Cats LightWeight litter.

Since humans are good at opening canned goods and cleaning kitty litter, they need to be well taken care of by their kitties, but despite the handful of abilities that humans have, they really can't care for themselves very well. Fortunately, cats are there to help keep humans warm, mentally stimulated and to remind them the importance of tongues.

How to Deal with Trick-or-Treaters in the UK

(Video Link)

British actors Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry have been working together for three decades. Their recent work is nice. But in my opinion, their best work as a comedic pair was in Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder Goes Forth.

A Bit of Fry & Laurie was a sketch comedy show that the duo operated from 1987 to 1995. Here’s a clip from it. The two talk about the American Halloween custom of trick-or-treating. They helpfully explain to Britons how to interact with the children.

In the comments, share your favorite sketch or scene from the collected work of Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.
