Please Re-Elect Gerald

This is what a political ad should be. Gerald Daugherty is a county commissioner in Travis County, Texas. He’s either a pretty good actor, or else this is exactly how he is in real life. And his wife Charlyn is an excellent actor. This ad is for his re-election campaign this year.

What you want in a local office like this is someone who cares about the job and is willing to do the work. It helps if he (or she) knows what they are doing. This ad conveys all that in a 60-second drama that will also make you laugh. -via Digg

Breaking News Stories That Took An Adorable Turn

(Image Link)

This just in- breaking news stories are usually sad and/or scary, and often involve doom, gloom and death, so they're not something viewers look forward to seeing.

But we'd all look forward to seeing another breaking news story if it involved a dog in a hat!

(Image Link)

Maybe the media should focus less on spreading fear and more on spreading smiles with fresh stories about local heroes, like Doggo the dog who was too cool for Tallahassee.

(Image Link)

Wouldn't it be nice to come across a news channel that focuses less on heartbreaking stories and more on the latest developments in the feline transportation industry? Looks like the catbus is on its way out!

The Tortoise and the Hare

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? You never really believed that a rabbit would stop in the middle a race and rest, only to end up losing from overconfidence. Well, here’s a real-life recreation of that race that confirms what happened. I think this might be in Thailand. The hare’s assumed potential speed is no match for the tortoise’s determination and persistence. Slow and steady wins the race! -via Uproxx

102-Year-Old Woman Crosses "Get Arrested" Off Her Bucket List

(Image Link)

With all the stories circulating about cops killing kids and unarmed people it's nice to read a heartwarming story about police officers doing something good- like arresting an old lady.

Don't worry- the centenarian in question isn't a criminal about to spend the rest of her life behind bars, she's just a sweet old lady who wanted to cross "get arrested" off her bucket list.

102-year-old Edie Simms from St. Louis, Missouri has lived a life of generosity and goodness, but for some reason she's always been fascinated with the idea of getting handcuffed and thrown in the back of a cop car.

So Michael Howard, creative director of the 5 Star Senior Center to which Edie has been donating handmade items for nearly a decade, decided to repay her kindness by calling the cops.

Here's more on this unusual arrest:

Since one of the center’s volunteers is friends with a local police officer, the police department “offered to send a police cruiser to take her” to the center, Howard said.

Simms’ reaction was one of unbridled joy.“She said oh that’d be wonderful and said, ‘do you think that they’d put the handcuffs on me?’” Howard recalled.

Once in the back of the car, Howard said Simms was one proud passenger. While passing a county police officer, Howard recalled: “Edie held her hands up to show that she had the handcuffs on! She’s just such a neat lady.”

Cats vs. Tortoises

(YouTube link)

Tortoises are fairly fearless and love to annoy cats. That’s probably for the same reason people annoy cats- because their reactions are funny. Several tortoises of varying sizes show their chutzpah in this compilation video. A tortoise knows he can stalk with impunity and just draw arms and legs inside the shell if the cat tries to fight back. For we humans, it’s a win-win, because we get to laugh at both the tortoise and the cat, get a video clip of the encounter, and step in to break things up if the situation gets truly dangerous. -via Tastefully Offensive

Elders React To Die Antwoord

(Image Link)

If you don't know who Die Antwoord are then check out the 2015 sci-fi film Chappie and you'll get a good idea of who Yolandi and Ninja are, or who their zef personas are anyway.

Die Antwoord creates niche music, meaning they have a far more select audience than, say, Taylor Swift, and some people say the Die Antwoord sound makes them want to stick pencils in their ears.

But is it the kind of music that makes open-minded Baby Boomers, who tend to like all kinds of music, want to Die? Fine Brothers Entertainment investigates:

We’re Going to the Dog Park!

Scrattie, like most dogs, doesn’t know where the destination will be when they get in the car. Often it’s just errands. Every once in a great while, they go to the dreaded veterinarian. But as soon as they make that left turn, Scrattie realizes they are going to the dog park!

World’s Oldest Man to Have Bar Mitzvah

Mr. Israel Kristal turned 113 years old on Thursday. Earlier this year, he was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest man alive. Born in Poland on September 15, 1903, Kristol studied the Torah from a young age and was a master candymaker most of his life. His mother died when he was seven, and then his father was drafted by the Imperial Russian Army and died in World War I. Kristol turned 13 during that time and never had a bar mitzvah.

During World War II, Kristol’s two children died during the family’s confinement in the Lodz ghetto. He and his wife were sent to Auschwitz in 1944, where she died. When the Red Army liberated Auschwitz in 1945, Kristol weighed only 37 kilograms (81 pounds). Within a few years, he remarried, emigrated to Haifa, Israel, and had two more children. He now has dozens of descendants. And soon he will have the bar mitzvah he was denied during the Great War.

His daughter, Shulamith Kristal-Kuperstoch, told CNN that Kristal's long-delayed bar mitzvah would be held close to his Hebrew birthday, which falls this year on October 2.

Kristal-Kuperstoch said it would be a "privilege" for her to organize the upcoming ceremony for her father, as a way of correcting the past, and as a gift to him.

Kristal has been carrying out Jewish rituals and responsibilities for 100 years now. When they get to the part where they traditionally say, “Today, you are a man,” they will really mean “Today, you are THE man.”

Maru Gets a Swing

You have to be pretty special to get a real swing inside your home. Maru is a world-famous celebrity cat, and he got one! But cats aren’t normally swingers, so this new contraption presented quite a puzzle to him. He doesn’t know what it is, but he knows he wants to get on it. Is he up to the challenge? You bet he is!

Lesser cats would have given up after a few failures, but lesser cats are not Maru. After many attempts, over who-knows-how-long, he masters the art of climbing onto the swing. That’s our Maru! -via Tastefully Offensive

An Honest Interpretation Of "Baby It's Cold Outside"

The song "Baby It's Cold Outside" has become a staple of the holiday season, but personally I've always found the lyrics to be a bit creepy.

The guy in the song sounds like he's trying to politely insist that the woman stay with him, and he's practically willing to pretend like there's a snowpocalypse going on outside to keep her at his side.

It's the kind of insistence that often leads to an uncomfortable situation (and sometimes allegations of sexual harassment), but at least it also led to a hilarious video starring Scott Aukerman and Casey Wilson!

An Orangutan's Adorable Reaction to a Magic Trick

YouTube Link

YouTuber Dan Zaleski uploaded this sweet video of a zoo visitor who showed an orangutan a "magic trick" that made the contents of a cup seem to disappear. The reaction of pure enjoyment from this intelligent creature is a reminder of its being a sensitive and observant species, so like us in many respects.

Mother Ferret at Work

A mother's work is never done. Jill the ferret is busy putting her babies to bed. She takes the last one from her human’s hand, but she’s not through!

(Live Leak link)

Oh, she just got caught up in the process and didn’t stop when all the babies were in. No, she does it again! Jill is adamant that it’s bedtime for her human, too. Some mothers are just bossy that way. -via Tastefully Offensive

Chicken Completes Agility Course

(YouTube link)

Who would ever expect a chicken to maneuver an agility course? This chicken named Stripe did it, after only four days of training! With the proper incentive, of course. Yeah, it’s a short course, but she’s a birdbrain.  -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Duck Gets a Halloween Costume

You remember Nibbles the Duck: he’s the one who couldn’t wait for his boy Jonny to get home from school. Now Nibbles is modeling his Halloween costume. He’s a Lobster!

(YouTube link)

You could say the costume is, um, daffy. What makes the video is the infectious laughter. Nibbles is quite a trooper. He’ll put up with anything for his beloved, if somewhat wacky, family. -via Tastefully Offensive

Six Ferrets and a Cat

One of these things is not like the others. A family that had six male ferrets took in an abandoned 5-week-old kitten. They named her Komari, and the ferrets took to her like she was one of them.

Komari eventually grew to be bigger than any of the ferrets, but they still regard her as their little sister. See an adorable album of pictures of Komari and the ferrets at imgur. -via Daily of the Day
