I think people are missing out on the evolutionary side of this. Our ansestors lived in a time where high energy food was the most important resource, they needed to be able to gorge when food was available and prize the ''high quality'' high energy foods i.e sugar and fat.
This is so hardwired because otherwise they would haved suffered competative disadvantage. The unusual ie unhealthy genetically individuals would be ones that could not store fat or didnt value such food in a system where food supply is unreliable (perhaps because their ansestors had a differnt food supply system).
Thats not an excuse but a reason
Of course that doesnt help people who are overweight however as other people have metioned people who put on fat easily can generally put on muscle more easyly too. Therefore by using weight exercise (and it doesnt have to be ridiculous just consistant) aimed to maximise muscle gain and therefore increase metabolic rate is what i would recomend... it worked for me but will take a long time...
