I would imagine that anyone in Saudi Arabia who has their hand chopped off for simple theft, or women who are jailed and whipped for being raped might think that Western laws are predominately better.
In Michigan it is illegal to own these fish. The idiots in the state legislature were afraid that these fish, because of their bright colors, would compete with our very cold water natives. As if they could survive here, and as if the bright colors would make them less conspicuous.
From the photograph, it is clear that they are picking through garbage, and not for just the stuff that is still unwrapped.
Having once worked in a kitchen, during college, I cannot imagine that it is sanitary to pick through this stuff. Along with waste food, and stuff we felt had become barely edible, we also threw away dead rats, drain gleanings, vomit soaked rags... the list just goes on.
