I read somewhere that bare-knuckle boxing was a lot safer - you couldn't hit someone that hard with your bare fist and fights stopped long before brain damage happened. Fatalities were almost unheard of and it's hard to imagine a modern boxing match lasting six and quarter hours as the record bare-knuckle match did.

As I understand it, Schrödinger’s thought experiement was intended to demonstrate that quantum-scale events don't scale up to the macro world without absurdities. Surely actually trying it rather defeats the point of a thought experiment?

DeLuxe - yes, but specifically this sort of lattice structure to replace the springing effect of air isn't new. Someone's already pointed out the Tweel and there are other examples of prior art, too.

Alex - we usually camp or stay with friends. These days we can probably find friends within 50 miles of almost anywhere we care to stay in the UK and, come to think of it, quite large bits of Europe, too.

We'd been living together for years before we got married, so we had quite a bit of "stuff" already. What we asked for, and got, was help with the wedding.

One friend made the bride's dress, another the bridesmaids' dressed. One friend did the catering (we bought the ingerdients) and another did the music. The Youth Service lent us the hall for free (we'd helped them a lot over the years) and another friend got up early the next morning to take us to the airport. One friend did the photography, another did the invites, all individually printed. Some people couldn't help directly so they chipped in for the cake and a few other things.

It was a great day - so many people had a vested interest in making it a success.

Airless tyres aren't new - this an old idea developed a bit. I love the way companies claim what they're doing is New and Revolutionary when it's been done decades before.

Neither of us sleep well on our own, but we found on our first night twenty-something years ago that the one thing we can't do is share a duvet.

We have a king-size bed with two double duvets. Not only does it mean I can have a cooler one that Squid does, but also you can wrap yourself up like a sausage and not steal the other's duvet.

D'yer reckon he's been listening to Obama's speech about aiming high and not giving up?

Lots of bemusement on this side of the pond. Can't think what all the fuss is about - politico encourages children to work hard at school for the good of themselves and the country? Ain't that what politicos are supposed to do?
