I have been humbled here tonight. I read the description and thought "Wow, that sounds stupid." And lo, it is not stupid, it is incredibly hilarious and awesome. I heard my girlfriend say "Oh, that is the band Jenn likes, they have the show on HBO," and I thought "That is stupid! They are not the people with the show. They have to be totally different! It is a coincidence." And LO, I have been proven wrong again. Yea verily.

This isn't by any means the first time this has happened, either. There was a (comparatively) high-profile instance where Matt Rice (who was married to Patrick Califia, both big figures in the LGBT community) got pregnant; it caused a ton of drama in the FTM (female-to-male transgendered) community, where a lot of very codependent people freaked out about whether that would be safe for the kid (he had stopped taking hormones long previously to make sure it would be safe) and whether it would magically justify all the transphobia in the world. (Yeah. That's how that works.)

http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0025,califia-rice,15833,1.html has a pretty good essay by Patrick about it.

It's happened a lot more than that, but usually it's a private affair.

thank you! I've been working on understanding how my own personal money works for years (through awesome Debtors Anonymous) and i still don't understand how all the national economic hoo-ha works, or stuff like bonds and bond issues and interest rates... seems like time for me to start studying that stuff!

even if Wal-Mart is in the right here, even if this family is in the wrong, there are dozens of reasons not to shop there. Any googling for "walmart is evil" will show that. Target is a much better solution, or individual independent stores wherever possible - if only for the much better customer service (at indies) and to keep the money in your community.

Placenta.

Well, I guess you don't want it all over the floor....

It's weird how giving birth and going to the bathroom have been moved from the easier, healthier squatting positions (horrible though "squatting" sounds) to this stuff that hurts more and causes hemorrhoids and what-have-you. And how much I still feel resistant to the squatting idea!

I was going to say the thing about how it's actually people's belief that they have been cursed that gets them! Supposedly there are examples of people dying as a result, but I think it would have to be awfully rare or awfully intense belief - or helped by outside hands.

yay! i also like that she seems to have good boundaries and just be giving her kids tools, instead of doing what a lot of parents in that position do and being like "my kid is going to save me! it is my kids' responsibility to save me! omg he saved my life!"
