I take it they tested _everyone_ else to ensure that really no one else had this particular marker? And din't leave out a single person in the whole of Britain? Really?

Yeah, this works on some old pacman machines. I noticed that machines in Europe didn't seem to have this issue, though. Apparently, in some earlier (than European) machines the ghosts would hover in the upper and lower region, being part of the logic: to search where pacman was last seen. As soon as they included a timeout, after which the ghosts started roaming the greater labyrinth again, they would unavoidably run into a targeting field that would allow pacman to be discerned.

Could all be some old folklore, but the times I tried this it did at least seem to work.

Ah, but that was part of my point! Not THAT period. They introduced the Iron Maiden later, post "Middle Ages". Although certain German regions were not *cough cough* really quite out of what we would call the dark... We're looking at late 1600s / early 1700s here. ;)

I beg to differ on the Iron Maiden. Whereas it was more of an object of "shame" rather than physical torture, it did exist, very much so. It was particularly commonly used in Germany (albeit not in the "dark" Middle Ages, but later) as one of many shaming devices, used to publicly display supposed criminal perpetrators. The Iron Maiden was used on "house dragons," i.e. women who opposed their men (and as christine pointed out, this actually started becoming more of an issue at a later time than specified in this article).
However, unlike the modern misconception, the real Iron Maiden was simply a "barrel." You were trapped within, but it did not contain any spikes or similar that caused any physical harm.
There's a particularly important book called "Der Hexenhammer" (and, I guess, the Lex Salica would be suited as well), that outlines the punishments of the time (e.g. being dipped in water while in a cage, as a baker, because your bread was too small).

My uncle was involved in a similar issue (no scam, just an incompetent driver who backed up) and it ended up in court. It's amazing what street forensics can reveal these days: the traces of motion that matched the rubber of the wheels clearly proved my uncle was right. So even without a dashcam, if the police force is competent enough, justice can still be served.

Thanks at Ms. C. for her eloquence in lieu of the grumpy man (I'm going with that gender due to the name, although, I know: this is the Internets).

From the late 70s to the late 80s I use an alias based on Shakespeare mythology. After that I called myself Padraig, Abdul Alhazared, for a brief time Nyarlathotep - then back to good AA - and, by a comodius vicus of recirculation, I finally got back to Padraig, seeing as Shakespeare's ghost better lay at rest.

Here's hoping it's a compressed air engine as well. I mean, seriously, are we now going to deplete our O2 reserves to combat the possible upcoming _shortage_ of oxygen? Someone, somewhere didn't do the math.

#2: as many as it takes to complete the circle...

#6: depends on whether the basketballs are inflated or not...

#12: what's the demand on pears?

#20: Mike the Spike has the right answer. Do I get a job with 50 people and the according salary?

Not really. Enormous is the amount of crackpots who believe or do not believe anything, because we know two facts: there is something, and there is nothing... It's called the human dialectic...
