As a non-American who occasionally visits I like a great deal about America, but am often shocked by the harshness, desperation and raw criminality in the cities. More amazing is the way that most Americans cope with it, blank it out, striding by the crazy homeless guy, avoiding that crack riven area, the 24/7 advertising is like mothers milk!
So, If I mention the rampant craziness and fear on the streets I'm met with blank stares. It's invisible.
Sure we have that stuff elsewhere, but not many places can match that Mad Max vibe. The Sublimated tension, the castigation of failures, the raw flaming hatred across the weirdly narrow political spectrum.

I'm pretty sure that Moe Szyslak is based on comedian Rich Hall. This has been mentioned many times and is in the wiki entry for the origing of the character. He was a friend of the writers at the time.
Watch a clip of Rich Hall and you'll notice the extreme resemblance.
