One thing that has bothered me about this discussion is how the media keeps parroting (like a broken record, haha) the "thousands" of broken temperature records during this heat wave. Sure, it was a huge heat wave by any measure. But what constitutes a record? The high temperature within some arbitrary lines around a town, city, or county? Why not go block by block, for that matter? It would be helpful if there were some way to collapse the temperature measurements across a large region (e.g., the USA) into a single index that essentially compares all measurements at once. Anyone aware if such a metric exists?

Very sad that it's come to this. I received a thank you card today from a woman who is seriously ill, and the mere fact that she took the time to hand-write me a personal note spoke volumes. Is there nothing that Americans won't outsource?!

I hope that they will at least catalog some of these interesting mutations. Science has learned a lot about development from cataloging mutant flies and I suppose we might learn some more from these mutant shrimp.

Why is it that people who do stupid things often wind up featured in some article like this, smiling away in a self-indulgent photoshoot? I suppose it's a good advertisement for proper nutrition, but I can't help but feel like they're rewarding her idiotic behavior with all the attention. (Though I agree that given her age, most of the blame goes to the parents!)

I'd say this is cool, or some kind of commentary on crime, but it really just strikes me as a form of littering. If the thing is abandoned for months, it should be moved out of the way. Reminds me of a car that was abandoned on the busy street where I worked once. It was there all through the winter, buried under the snow, before the spring thaw and the tow truck cleared them both away. It took up a valuable spot and was an eyesore and I was happy to see it go.

Micro Machines? Heck, these were from MY childhood in the '80s. Other than that, it was yet another "best of" list of things that make me feel old :^)

So if red states are Twilight readers, is the GOP going to nominate Edward Cullen next year for President? A horrifying thought, but not much more so than the current field of candidates.

No wonder the price of a stamp keeps rising so quickly. This is ridiculous - the job of the USPS is to deliver the mail, not decipher it. If they had a policy to return mail that was illegible, the offenders' handwriting would certainly change in a hurry (or they'd finally learn how to print on an envelope).
