My favorite local fair is the Bridgewater Country Fair in Bridgewater, CT. It's put on by the local fire station so there's antique fire trucks. They always start the fair weekend off with the firemen's parade which also includes the children's pet parade. But what's really great there's a great assortment of livestock competition - cows, sheep (both pet-able), an occasional horse, chickens, ducks, rabbits, sometimes turkeys. There's usually a sheep herding demo with some trained dogs. They have pony and tractor pulls. Sometimes an oxen pull. Every so often there's a lumberjack contest, which is always fun. There's usually the racing pigs, which are the best. Plus there's the crafts tent, which houses the baking competition (which I usually enter), the gardening/plant entries, collections, and needlework/knitting/quilting displays. Next door to that is the fireman's hall where they put the local artwork, adults and children, photos and paintings/drawings. There are the rides and rigged games that I too usually avoid, and all manner of foods, plus a handful of vendors and a variety of other side shows that change every year. It's my little slice of new england country and I love it every year.
Wonderful article - Richard Scarry really is a widely un-sung champion of children's books. It's nice to see him get his due. (@ Closet Nerd - Nothing wrong with Sandra Boynton either! She's wonderful)
This is very sweet and to those being down on this and/or marriage are just bitter. There's nothing wrong with a big to-do for a proposal. I wish them all the luck in the world.
As neat as this is, I have to ask myself - with the high rate of HIV and AIDS in Africa, wouldn't the condom be better used for its intended purpose rather than a ball? I understand the joys the ball creates, but surely there's another way to make a ball?
It is a statuette of Pac-Man's ancient egyptian ancestor (note the beard. It originally held the great golden pebble of Osiris, which has since been lost to time.

As someone who lived in South Dakota for a few years, I can say with fair certainty that it has nothing to do with their ethnicity. People in small towns do not like new people in their small towns. I know of someone who grew up in one of those small towns, moved to the city (30 mins away - his parents still live there), and is now treated as an outsider. If you live there, you have to always have lived their. If you leave, you don't exist anymore. Yes, there are reasons these small towns are small and getting smaller. They cannot cope with new people in their midst.
I was bitten on my face by a chow/husky mix when I was 7. To this day I am afraid of any dog with a curled up tail. Don't ever take for granted that any dog will be friendly
I actually saw a meteor that night too! it wasn't as large as this one appears, but it was much bigger than anything i'd ever seen in the sky other than the moon. Must have been something in the skies that night.
