Two generations now have been told by the market that the measure of their success as human beings, attempting to live a full life, is to multi-task constantly and fill every minute with meaningful activities. Anything less is wasted time and we should feel guilty for our failure to 'produce'. But it has been proven that humans aren't very good at doing several tasks simultaneously; so we're all patting ourselves on the backs for being sub-optimal. We're maintaining the image of success minus the substance, and bitching constantly about how dissatisfying our lives, never seeing friends or family. We're just too "busy".

Terry's piece above is whatcha call a 'juicy rationalization'.

That is not as far or as high as a tiger can jump. That is as far and as high as that tiger needed to jump to get the meat and please the humans. A domestic pussycat can jump that high and for the same reasons. Awesome to see a big cat do it though, mostly we just see them lounging around in a zoo.

The first thing I did before whipping out my checkbook was look at their list of sponsors - a long and prominent list. It is in the best interests of the horse racing industry to take better care of these discarded horses. The public is taking an increasingly dim view of animal abuse in any guise, profitable or otherwise. This video serves as a nice PR piece. As someone in the film says, there needs to be a lot more retirement farms like Old Friends.

There was a greyhound race track between this town and the next, and there are a number of aging former racing dogs in our neighborhood being walked by their adoptive owners. The track has been torn down and new construction is beginning, but not for a new and improved track. I would like to say that public pressure killed that business, but it was probably the economy. Public sympathy for those animals also played a part though. It pleases me to think there are still a few things we can do to heal the dark side of capitalism.

"It's difficult to work in a group when you're omnipotent." I recall throwing my head back and laughing till tears ran down my cheeks when I heard that line. Every human excuse for not being able to get along with others paled in comparison. That kept me giggling for a week.

I was sitting at my desk on campus, and me and my boss were listening to the radio, when the programming was interrupted to announce the shuttle had exploded, killing all onboard. We were simply stunned into silence. Harder to imagine a January day in western Washington state could get any grayer, but I recall that hour as very dark and quiet.
