Matthias Wandel's "Woodgears.ca" site is worth visiting for his wonderful machines and other designs. He created a binary memory system using marbles and wooden toggles that is perhaps the best explanation of how binary memory works. Many of his projects are downloadable as SketchUp models, so you can build them yourself.
Since Heaven it hath not pleased on thee Deep erudition to bestow, Or black Latino's gift of tongues, No Latin let thy pages show. Ape not philosophy or wit, Lest one who cannot comprehend, Make a wry face at thee and ask, "Why offer flowers to me, my friend?" (from Commendatory Verses to Don Quixote)
The water supply to a shower could simply be set to a mechanical device that measures the amount of water consumed (the water going through the pipe would make a turbine rotate until it reached a pre-determined stop, at which point the water would shut off). The device would be on the other side of the shower wall, so to be reset one would need to leave the shower stall.
When I saw "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", I was struck by the size of the alien spaceship, but also by all of the lights on it. It made me think: what if these aliens never developed the transistor? Their technology would depend on giant electronic devices with vacuum tubes to switch circuits on and off, necessitating gigantic spacecraft and extremely efficient design. A collaboration between such people and ours, with our microcircuitry, would lead to a revolution in space travel.
The list includes "Fantastic Voyage", which has a great portrayal of Raquel Welch. She did a great job rebuffing the pilot (?) of the craft, who was trying to pick her up. She almost shot his hand off with a laser rifle.
