I stopped using eBay when my credit card number was stolen on paypal. I wouldn't go near it now.

Thank goodness for the Amex fraud department - I was never charged a cent for the fraudulent charges, and they replaced my card before I even knew it had happened.

I only use Amex online these days. And never, ever paypal.

Hmm. Whining was usually the one thing that would make me not get that thing for my kids, ever.

They learned to ask nicely for what they wanted, or, save their pennies to buy it themselves.

The misunderstandings here about mental illness are sad.

From NIHM:

About 5.7 million American adults or about 2.6 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year,1 have bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person’s life.

“Manic-depression distorts moods and thoughts, incites dreadful behaviors, destroys the basis of rational thought, and too often erodes the desire and will to live. It is an illness that is biological in its origins, yet one that feels psychological in the experience of it; an illness that is unique in conferring advantage and pleasure, yet one that brings in its wake almost unendurable suffering and, not infrequently, suicide.”

“I am fortunate that I have not died from my illness, fortunate in having received the best medical care available, and fortunate in having the friends, colleagues, and family that I do.”

Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., An Unquiet Mind, 1995, p. 6.

Jail needs to be the last resort instead of the first. My nephew is mentally ill, and has ended up in a jail a few times for minor infractions. Once they realize he is mentally ill, they get him into treatment, but jail shouldn't be the first stop for people who are simply minor behavioral problems.

Lots of people in jail have untreated mental illnesses. Perhaps even most of them, which leads to the drug and alcohol abuse.

And everyone in jail ought to be getting Omega 3s in their diet, which reduces violent behavior. We need to just get more Omega 3s into the entire food system, actually. Our diets have become deficient in it over the last fifty years as there is more processed food and less natural food, and less fish in our diets.

Amazing how many problems might be solved simply by better nutrition.

Alcohol increases GABA levels creating a temporary feeling of relaxation and enjoyment. But after that ends, you'll just feel worse, when the GABA levels drop.

Since GABA levels are also related to fear and anxiety, not too surprising.

And there are many, many legal issues involved in treating the mentally ill and homeless. I've had to set up guardianships and conservatories for two of my relatives. It involves a great deal of legal work. It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of LAW. That's why it is a government responsibility, and not "socialist".
