The Great Hare

This is The Great Hare, a sculpture by Canadian artist Mary Catherine Newcomb. She made the 15-foot long structure from turf that she grew over shaped mounds of compost and soil. It was on public display in 2011 at the Cambridge Sculpture Garden for CAFKA, an art show in the Kitchener, Ontario area. She also made an 8-foot long indoor version in 2012.

Because of its construction, The Great Hare is, in a sense, a living object. In an interview, Newcomb described the creative process:

The process of making the Great Hare (my most recent piece) relates to the fibre arts in a specific way. The turf blanket is cut and sewn onto parts of a supporting frame so that it can grow into the supporting soil. As the grass grew, I would comb it and give the piece "haircuts".

Circadian Rhythms

(John McNamee/Pie Comic)

No, you must be mistaken. "Rested" is just a myth, like the Loch Ness Monster or North Dakota. If you feel rested, that's just your body telling you that you're lazy and you must immediately work on something--anything--until you no longer feel that way. If necessary, invent a chore for yourself.

Apparently Kid

Reporter Sofia Ojeda talked to people at the Wayne County Fair in Pennsylvania for TV station WNEP. Apparently, she talked to 5-year-old Noah Ritter about his fair experiences. Apparently, he’s having a good time, even though he apparently has never been on the news before. -via Bits and Pieces

Anatomy of Songs

Now we know what’s really in those songs! Yeah, we knew, but it’s cool to see it mapped out so well. This comic is by John Atkinson at Wrong Hands. Folks asked about classical, jazz, and metal, so he may do another as a followup. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Nolan’s First Solid Food

(YouTube link)

Six month old Nolan gets his first spoonfuls of solid food. He doesn’t know how to eat yet, but he’s willing to learn! This is an everyday slice of life, but Nolan is so darn cute and the whole family is so happy about a bite of sweet potato that it will surely make you smile. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

An Ode To Military Working Dogs

Buzzfeed posted the stories of six military dogs who displayed bravery, loyalty, and intelligence in the face of danger to our service members. For example, Sgt. Rex was paired with Corporal Megan Leavey for his second and third deployment to the Middle East.

In 2006, the pair was on patrol when Sgt. Rex discovered a slew of planted explosives. As they continued their search, one of the explosives was detonated. Both Leavey and Sgt. Rex sustained severe injuries, but they remained at the scene and continued to work together.

Leavey’s military career came to end due to the injuries she sustained during the attack, but Sgt. Rex recovered so he went back to work.

Upon his retirement, Leavey started a campaign for his adoption. Sgt. Rex was reunited with Leavey and lived out the last eight months of his life with her, swimming, snuggling and playing in the snow for the first time.

That’s a good dog. Read the rest of the stories in An Ode To Military Working Dogs.

(Photo: China Daily)

He will not get the chance, but Yaoyi will get to heal the sick. Before he died, he asked that his organs be donated to people who need transplants. Within eight hours of his death, his kidneys and liver were transplanted.

After they were removed from his body, the doctors from the operating room bowed to honor him.

Watch Out Grumpy Cat, Here's Grumpy Guinea Pig

YouTube Link

Move over Grumpy Cat. Like you, this Guinea Pig's standard answer is in the negative. And he actually makes noise. He might not have his Grump Face perfected, as it's still in Cute Face mode, but he's working on it. Better plan your retirement and put some of that money away for your Grumpy Grandkitties' college funds. Via Unique Daily.

Darth Vader Wood Stove

He is more machine than man now. Twisted, welded, and evil. This is Darth Vader, an outdoor wood stove built by Instructables member doddieszoomer. He made it from an old gas steel bottle. He used an angle grinder to shape the helmet accents. Doddieszoomer then finished the project with spray paint for the rich black Vader look.

Kissin' Kitty

This Abyssinian cat is named Tommy, but it seems that Romeo would be a better name for such a kissing enthusiast. So much for cats supposedly being standoffish. Even my dogs wouldn't demand that much affection. Via Tastefully Offensive.

Cyclist Gets Hit by Car, Flies through the Air, But Somehow Lands on His Feet

(Video Link)

YouTube member CycleJack was pedaling through Romford, Essex, UK on a wet day. He was traveling about 22 MPH. A car cut across his path and he hit the fender. CycleJack flew over the car, head over heels, but landed neatly on his feet. It was an impressive bit of unintentional acrobatics caught on camera.

And it's a good thing that CycleJack was wearing a camera. The driver tried to dispute that she was at fault. The video footage took care of that problem:

Safe to say the video has saved me a lot of hassle and 3 weeks later the cheque has already arrived from the insurance company.

Content warning: CycleJack uses a bit of foul language when the car hits. But who can blame him?

Unusual Landscapes Across the Globe

     The Wave,
          Arizona

It is easy for us to get so caught up in our lives and focused on our immediate surroundings that we forget what an amazing world we inhabit. The complex stuctures formed from a multitude of environmental factors such as erosion and volcanic activity make the Earth rich with exquisite exceptions to commonly seen landscapes. Agricultural and other manmade innovations and features, such as Bali's rice terraces, can be equally pretty. Pictured here are some unusual and beautiful landscapes in the world. See more examples in this Science Dump article.

Lightning Fast Reponse

YouTube Link

A British man is filming a storm with his phone when lighting strikes in close proximity to him. His (NSFW, language) reaction is amusing, and his video capture of the lightning is spectacular. As one of the commenters on YouTube remarked, "The ONLY time vertical filming should ever be used. Good job, thumbs up." Via 22 Words.

Kayakers Get Up Close to Whales

(YouTube link)

How close can you get to a whale? Just ask Jonah, Marlin, or Pinocchio! These two kayakers off the coast of Argentina, a father and daughter, didn’t get swallowed, but they managed to get lifted out of the water when a massive whale surfaced. Sure, you want to get a good look, but whales are like icebergs: there’s a lot more under the water than meets the eye. -via Viral Viral Videos

Baby Monkey and Jack Russell Terrier Pups Become Fast Friends

YouTube Link

Mubi is a 2-month-old drill monkey who was first attacked, then abandoned by her mother. But her story sweetened significantly when Simon Jeffrey, a keeper at Port Lympne Reserve, near Canterbury, Kent, UK, took Mubi home to play with his Jack Russell Terrier puppies. Now Mubi is happy, thriving and the pups are schooling her in the ways of animal play. Via Laughing Squid.
