IIRC the Batcave was first introduced in the 1943 Columbia serial as the Bat's Cave. It was only later incorporated into the comic books.

That's not the only part of the concept that originated on screen.

It is common to leave churches standing for such inundations in many cultures because nobody wants to demolish a church. So whole towns and villages have been leveled leaving churches standing.

Interestingly there are myths all over the world of churches still standing in reservoirs when the church was demolished along with the other buildings. A myth persists that on still nights the bells of Derwent church can be heard from the shores of Ladybower reservoir in Derbyshire. This has never been true, because although the church spire remained intact for three years after the valley was inundated the bell was taken to another church the year before inundation. Three years after the waters rose the church spire was demolished. It is reported that the church spire remained intact due to public pressure. Once the fuss had died down it was demolished. Even though both these facts are known and that the water level has fallen low enough to clearly show the site of the old church on several occasions the myth still persists.

@Sandi Cracky I can spell PhD but it seems you can't spell argument. Never, EVER post on spelling without running your post through the spell checker.

Jeffrey the nature of the impact meant he was unlikely to break his neck. He could however have easily suffered a severe concussion and drowned as a result.

@ted Letsby Avenue would be pronounced in exactly the same way as "Lets be having you." Which is a phrase which was supposedly traditionally used by the police in England.

@smartss the problem is not with the trick cyclists. The problem is that many kids are being diagnosed as autistic or worse still "on the autistic spectrum" by practitioners with no psychiatric training. I've heard of cases of schools labeling students as autistic on their permanent record without any medical diagnosis whatsoever.

My favourite is Letsby Avenue near Sheffield Airport and also the base of the South Yorkshire Police helicopter. The story goes that when the site was under construction somebody asked one of the police staff what the road was to be called and he jokingly replied Letsby Avenue and somehow it stuck.

And a few miles up the road there used to be a Butt Hole Road near Connisborough Castle. That's Butt as in archery but. It had been that way for a long, long time until some humourless residents successfully campaigned to have the name changed to Archers Way.

@Ned here in the UK the police never see a penny of those fees. They are set by the government and companies who contract for the police receive the money. It's something like £150 ($230) for recovery and £20 ($30) a day storage.

The biggest con however is that the charges are the same for a motorcycle as a car. That's right the government consider that it would cost the same to recover and store even the smallest and lightest moped as the biggest and heaviest car. Of course the recovery companies love getting motorcycle jobs as they can send out a pickup to collect the bike and store it in a corner of the yard for effectively nothing, the profits are therefore huge.

One simple reason why I never drink hot tea in hot weather. I don't like the stuff and I never drink it whether the weather is hot or not.
