I have a good friend who is not only the only child of his parents; but also, the only child on both sides of his family. He has no cousins as none of his parents' siblings had children. He is the only one I know personally like that.

I've heard cougar a handful of times. It is one of the most nerve-wracking sounds, like someone screaming. The last time I heard one, I didn't even think of recording it on my cell phone. It was dark and I just wanted to get from my car to the house. It was close by in the ravine behind my house.
