This is not a "moon rocket". Ares I is a low earth orbit transport designed primarily for getting people to the space station less expensively than on the Shuttle.

The capsule is designed to also be part of possible future lunar missions, but these missions would use a different launch system called Ares V.

This distinction is extremely important, because the systems are very, very different and it is unknown if NASA will be able to support two divergent launch systems.

An alternative proposed design is DIRECT, which inhabits the gap between Ares I and V, being capable of more complicated Low Earth Orbit missions as well as the lunar mission capability using two launches.

sort of a poorly phrased question.

there's very little dispute that global warming/global climate change is real. there is a lot of empirical evidence to back that up.

so the first question is whether this is caused by or exacerbated by industrial carbon emissions, or whether it is part of some natural cycle. now, here again we have evidence in comparing the current swing to the existing historical record and finding something unprecedented. this points strongly to a human cause, but maybe there is something we don't understand about natural swings in climate that isn't encompassed in the historical record.

ultimately, that's supposition. based on what we do know, the strong, strong implication is that this swing is caused or "helped along" by human generated carbon emissions. most of the responsible reactions to these changes tie into other concerns like sustainability and energy independence anyway, and really shouldn't be particularly controversial.

i'm not going to dismiss a genetic argument for intelligence out of hand, but in reading this article no argument for genetics is really made.

"Though Jews make up less than 3% of the U.S. population, they have won more than 25% of the Nobel Prizes awarded to American scientists since 1950, account for 20% of this country’s chief executives and make up 22% of Ivy League students" is just correlation. the cause for this could be genetic or it could be cultural.

it is an argument for biology that is surprisingly light on biology. where's the beef? where is the genetic evidence itself, beyond the statistical correlations presented?

i tried to read further to see if the scientists produced a biological basis for the claim, but only found out that the scientist proposing this claim isn't a biologist, but a physicist.

not knowing the full details of this, Ola Amigo seems to have a good handle on the risks involved here.

a woman is being raped, the rapist may have a weapon, the transit employees have no weapons. from a police perspective, i'm not sure i'd want untrained transit employees putting themselves into danger.

maybe the employees get shot. now when i arrive on the scene there's a raped woman AND a shot transit employee.

maybe in attempting to intervene, they escalate the situation and the rapist ends up killing the woman.

once the transit employees make the decision to get involved, not all of the outcomes are good for them OR the woman being raped.

it makes me wonder if there wasn't police testimony to the effect of "we see what usually happens when untrained individuals try to get involved in this kind of thing, and the results are often ugly".

Edward - i live about a block north of this place and in a similar, though smaller apartment complex.

$958 sounds right to me. that's about what i pay after rent and food. same area, same size apartment.

we see these guys walking past our place and to this complex all the time. like your average street alcoholic, they look dirty and unkempt. unlike your average street alcoholic they never bother anyone and never ask for money.

the dollar amounts seem bang on the nose to me. it's not a lavish lifestyle that is being provided here, just secure accommodations that keep these people from becoming desperate and doing the kinds of things that really start costing society.

this is a really misleading, inflamatory headline.

praying for the patient is not the issue here. if she was simply to have prayed in private, there would be no issue.

the issue is using her position to promote her religion in the workplace. the initial problem that started all this was handing out prayer cards to patients, leading to the following warning:

"Your NMC [Nursing Midwifery Council] code states that 'you must demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to equality and diversity' and 'you must not use your professional status to promote causes that are not related to health'."

which sounds reasonable enough to me. the nurse says:

"I was told not to force my faith on anyone but I could respond if patients themselves brought up the subject [of religion]."

which also sounds reasonable - let the patient decide if they want to discuss religion. unfortunately, the nurse was unable to keep her promise to only involve religion if the patient brought it up. for violating this promise, she's been suspended. it sounds harsh, but she'd been warned in the past, agreed not to do it and then went ahead and did it anyway.

While a dissection and thorough understanding of greed is important and worthy of study, i can't help but wonder if more attention and study should be paid to the people who were on to madoff and reported him.

what was their psychology and how do we encourage it? learn to listen to it?
