There are two main reasons the capital of the U.S. is not Richmond, VA, and "big brother" is on his way to controlling everything. Reason 1 - At the beginning of the war, Lee's generals failed to carry out some of his most important orders which would have lead to an incredibly quick Confederate victory. Lee's immense compassion for these men who were fighting the invasion of their homeland caused him to bear with them rather than courmartial them. Reason 2 - The lack of Confederate resources as the war dragged on and Grant's utilization of his enormous manpower and support infrastructure simply overwhelmed Lee's army.
