Crudely Wrott's Comments

The end is coming soon (er).

It just goes to show that the more you know the more you know you don't know. The rest of the story, that is.

When we know all of the story we will be very, very old. I'd say that now we are adolescents with room to grow. The act of growing being voluntary, of course.

What the vise did not do is tightly enclose the cartridge which is necessary to keep the cartridge from failing and turning into shrapnel. Chances are the bullet didn't go very far or fast since the exploding gases were not focused down a barrel but expending themselves out from between the vise jaws.

The dude probably took a piece of brass casing in the arm. Too, he may have been dumb enough to put his arm in harms way and the slow bullet did some minimal damage.

All together now: "What an ultramaroon!"

Mandelbrots on a 8086 circa '88. L Systems and even some home made recursions. (I still have a fondness for hypotrochoids.) Waaaaaaay sloooooooowww. But irresistibly fascinating.

How many hours did I spend waiting for the next pixel? I don't even want to think about.

And today I can make images like this while I go bleed the lizard.

Ain't tech wonderful? See how it provides tools for imagination and curiosity.

Happy Monkey!

@Mainer/Alaskan:

Thank you for concisely stating the background that I relied on in making my earlier post (Oct. 28, 12:16 am).

It is not the gun, or the fact that it kills easily, that is at issue. The issue is personal responsibility. This sense of civic duty prevents gun owners from shooting their neighbors in precisely the same way that it prevents Little League players from attacking each other with baseball bats.

@those commenters who are unfamiliar with the handling and operation of firearms, why aren't you frothing at your mouths about bows, arrows and atlatls? Or steak knives?

A question for those who do not live in America but excoriate our freedom to own and use firearms: What is the murder weapon of choice in your country? Why haven't you done something about that weapon, like making them go away by passing a law?

This could have been prevented had one of the adults present simply laid a hand atop the barrel. In this way the barrel could have been prevented from "burning" upwards and back.

Any child can shoot an Uzi, once properly instructed. In this case, the adults misfired and failed to properly instruct and assist the boy. I'm sure they are keenly aware of this now.

In this case the deadly agent was not the gun or the child's inexperience; rather, the relaxed attitude of the adults present.

Guns, like fist-sized rocks and stout sticks, are deadly. People not paying attention are deadlier.

Along with the rights and privileges of citizenship comes the responsibility of good citizenship. Good citizenship is simply behaving in such a manner, and arranging ones priorities in a way that promotes and protects the ideals of our society and that set an example for others.

Promoting the security of self and of one's neighbors would fall under this definition. So would resisting attempts to violate the general security of one's own home and community.

The only problem I have with Horn's action is that he didn't get the attention of the thieves first. He could have given them a chance to yield to force of arms, to put down their loot and surrender like the gutless little bastards they were. They could have had the privilege of going to jail with wet pants and their lives. For Horn to have hailed them and given them the opportunity to fully appreciate their situation would have been a boon, a ticket to tomorrow. But the thieves, by choosing their course of action, which was precisely to violate the peace and security of their fellow citizen's lives, have put their own peace and security in jeopardy, as their actions were clearly against the law. They narrowed their own chances. Had the run into someone else, someone who would hesitate to shoot, they might be alive. But the ran into Mr. Horn. And he shot them dead.

Thieves should therefore be advised. Just as there are crooks and fools who think nothing of stealing and assaulting the law abiding and gentle, there exists among the law abiding and gentle those who would think nothing of stopping a crook or a fool cold, suddenly and terminally. And it's always been so. A sharp claw sheathed in the notions of personal responsibility and power vested in the common population.

For well over thirty years some knucklehead somewhere has been threatening to blow our asses up. In view of the limited success they have had I am not distracted or overly worried.

What bothers me is the difficulty our government has in balancing freedom against security. Our 'leaders' are not very good at this.

This is why I don't follow them.

Those who comment "Poor horsey" show their equine ignorance and have obviously never established a working relationship with a horse. Like any other intelligent and social animal they enjoy learning and participating in all sorts of activities. They are eager and able partners with humans. Well treated and maintained, horses enjoy the pursuit of a goal just as we do. Do yourselves a favor. Learn to handle a horse and find a new level of interspecies relationships. They are not pets, they are partners that are glad to hold up their end of the bargain.
