Hi, i love neatorama, and usually love the great links, but this one is really quite bad.
The information is pretty shoddy on the link, why would you want to associate neatorama - usually a fascinating site - with some site which makes claims like these, including a section which says that London has a "high risk of this type of flooding, as depicted in this shot from the 2007 movie Flood"
Really, there is not much scientific integrity in that statement even if they claim without reference that scientists claim it will be flooded in 100 years.
I believe there is a lot of evidence for global warming and climate change, but i really wish that you guys didnt put this link up.

so why dont they cover up the hole with a huge metal lid which they could helicopter over the top, and then starve it of oxygen and then harvest the gas?
Im sure it really wouldnt be that difficult, there have been trickier feats performed with the wonders of modern engineering.

well, selective breeding is a form of genetic engineering.
This is a frustrating misconception by the public in relation to GMOs.
These are still genetically modified organisms, just like any cow bred to prefer a type of crop, or have a likelihood to be unusually massive, its just that they dont have introduced genes such as extra beta carotene from a carrot gene, or extra iron from a haemaglobin.

Oh that is so last year.
I was at my local pub (a common sydney university hangout) where usually there is trivia and people getting their kit off to try and score free jugs of beer and stuff, anyway for about 6 months there was a night when a god botherer used to hold his congregation thingy there like a service or something like bible study.
It was also in the paper.
Thats the thing about the U.K.
they are always trying to be as cool as Australians! :P

I think it is used to sort out the long bits of wheat and the seed bits which are used for flour. So you get a whole lot of the long bits of wheat and bung it in the box, and then slide over the bit with the hole, and then shake it. And all of the seed bits are poured out when you shake it (now holding it upside down) and poured into a bowl for grinding or something into flour, and you can then feed the long wheaty bits to the cows, or your wife, or your fax machine.

The first is a nail/bolt remover (which is obvious because the parts extending from the centre have wooden parts to act as leverage/handles and the centre is where the head of the bold or nail fits,
and the second is clearly a 1980's belt buckle. just fit some purple or yellow silk through, or a large piece of white leather, and fold it through and voila, you will look just like Cyndi Lauper.

hi,
Im an Aussie, and i have seen this type of thing before. I was on a trip with my best mate and his dad (who was a surveyer) and we were driving around in the country. A huge ute drove past on tiny little train wheels and it was so strange. Paul (the dad) explained it that there are some cars that have an extra gear where they have some other auxilliary device attatched to the car, like a huge winch or in this case train wheels. In countryside Australia, apparently they use it for some sort of maintenance/service/repair thingo or something. When they need to get off the tracks, they just take it out of gear, and retract the wheels and drive off. So I am not quite sure what this wierd photo is, but that is probably a similar story in a different context.
