On a very tangential note, the Fort Irwin National Training Center dips into Death Valley. The last time I was there in 2004, my team leader decided to wear the same pants through 2 months of training (he did shower, but never changed his pants).

At the end of the exercises he stood the almost completely white, sweat-encrusted pants up on end without support, and a good laugh was had by all.

So yeah, Death Valley is hot.

Actually I knew a carrot farmer from Spokane who absolutely hates the "baby carrot" trend but was forced to but the machine to make them, because his business for regular carrots had plummeted. As he noted, all of the best stuff is in the skin.

Interestingly Kias, marriage thrived worldwide for thousands of years in the absence of state licensed marriage. It wasn't until a couple of generations after the introduction of marriage licensing that marriage failure rates began to grow at a geometric rate. My personal observation has been that terrible government policies that corrode societies, usually take 1-2 generations before their effects are felt.

Furthermore, what was the great need that spurred marriage licensing in the first place? What was the great travesty that needed rectifying? Miscegenation .

Marriage licensing schemes were cooked up from the beginning to interfere with interracial relationships. This was a nux vomica from its conception.

Miss Cellania as much as I'd love to discuss those corollaries at great length, I think they will derail the question at hand, so I will very respectfully remain mute and re-assert my original point.

There is no legitimate or moral right or authority to interfere with another individual's association/dissociation. Full stop.

When someone asks "but what about the effect on X" I picture a reasonable, moderate, moral person in 1830 asking "but what about the entire southern economy? Wouldn't a lot of farmers be hurt?" A lot of very good and decent people asked just this.

Only unreasonable extremists were willing to say that the obvious short term consequences were less important than the greater moral truth, and I realize that I am positing a radical position that may have negative effects on many people.

I choose option 3 - the government has no business in marriage, period. Not to prescribe or proscribe it, tax it, reward it, license it, laud it, or wag a finger at it.

Both sides are wrong, because both sides want to violate one half of the twin rights of free association/dissociation. One would keep those who want to associate freely apart, but they are losing. The winning side would force, under pain of robbery and cages, others to support something they disapprove of, and will deny them the right to abstain at all levels.

Government has no more business in marriages than it has in baptisms.

Of course, now that I say that, it makes me wonder about the changes that we will see to gaming as 2 billion people join the internet over the next ten years... the narrative will surely shift in fascinating ways.

I agree with Moddox; be the change you seek. As more an more girls grow up playing video games with dad rather than (for example) watching the ball game, we will see more women invested in the medium, thinking in gaming terms, and creating content relevant to them.

Methinks this perceived problem will solve itself demographically, rather than by protest or argumentation. Many "social issues" solve themselves this demographically, though we are rarely patient enough to wait.

Human speech is a great example of spontaneous human order, dictionaries notwithstanding. Avoid the is-ought hassle and just accept the fact that a growing majority consider caps to be rude shouting.

His fist isn't the only mass involved if the punch is thrown properly. The entire linkage from the ball of his foot through his hip, shoulder and arm are all involved.

Also, Superman is a stupid and broken concept.
