Liberty is kind of right, but it's not that simple. DDT is harmful, but only if used improperly. If used properly, it's deleterious effects can be greatly minimised, and it can be used as an effective tool to battle arthropod borne diseases such as malaria.

However, DDT alone won't solve the problem; controlling malaria is going to take a lot more than a single chemical. There are plenty of alternatives to DDT that work well, but as always the problem is infrastructure, support and environmental effects.

Actually eliminating malaria is going to take massive social and environmental changes, not just pesticides.

I take some small offence to the fact that Kepler's Somnium was put in to the 'pre-scientific' category. Kepler is arguably one of the first modern scientists. I would agree with Asimov and Sagan in calling it one of the first works of science fiction.

I mean, it's about a guy who goes to the moon and meets aliens. True, there are demons and witches involved, but the magic clearly served the same plot points at hyper-advanced technology in modern sci-fi.

I'd be willing to bet that isn't the recipe, there is no way KFC uses teaspoons as a measure; I'd be willing to bet large sums of money that they would do it by weight rather than by volume. They might even do mass fractions.

You can buy plenty of raw milk cheeses in America, but the law requires that it be aged for something like 30 days before sale. It's not a problem for most cheeses, most actually benefit from sitting around for a month or so.

That being said, there isn't much in the way of actual scientific evidence that raw milk cheese makes much of a difference; often the milk is heated enough in the cheese making process to induce similar changes in the structure of the milk.

Far as I can tell, raw milk is more expensive, so more expensive cheeses use raw milk.

I'm glad someone else caught the Almond thing, it saves me the irate comment.

While Lawrence makes a good point about absinthe, and one that I agree with, he makes a small error. Absinthe is indeed toxic, it's actually rather toxic, It's not not more toxic than a comparable amount of any other source of alcohol.

It seems to me that not only are the octopodes smart enough to use tools, but they are smart enough to develop the classic Freudian malady, Shell Envy. As a mollusc, at one point in their life history they had a shell, but it has receded into nothingness. Ashamed of their lack, they must make due with artificial substitutes.
