Bees are far more reliable and will also pollinate millions of other flowers that each have the potential to make some genetics company rich so long as they're not forced into extinction by pesticide companies. Common sense is by definition "common". That being widespread, intrinsic, objective and recognized by everyone. What these people are discussing is personal subjective opinion, which is always debatable, that is: UNCOMMON sense, or else it would be recognized by all parties. I hope that's obvious.

butterfly/moth caterpillars have a small gland on the back of their head that controles their pupation timing and rate of growth. if it's removed or damaged, they can become huge. usually they die before emerging but sometimes the resulting moth is huge. (I never tried it and I don't have a link)

it sounds like the nuclear option where if you use it (in war of course) then the enemy is absolved from using their own germ warfare. Since it's been eradicated from the natural environment, there are still a few (known) governmental stockpiles, anywhere it pops up can be assumed to be an attack.
