Storing vital seeds - and food - is important because of the myriad of calamities that could destroy our civilization. We also need to store our collective knowledge and culture so, if Doomsday does come to pass, our descendants won't have to re-invent a lot of wheels. Or do without our classics of literature, drama and music.
